Disruption around the Strait of Hormuz could raise costs and tighten availability for some fertilizer products used in the United States, but U.S. exposure is not uniform. A USDA-credited analysis using 2023 sourcing estimates identifies urea and phosphate fertilizers DAP/MAP as the clearest direct exposures; it found negligible direct Gulf exposure for potash and anhydrous ammonia. The available evidence describes ongoing maritime instability, not a quantified fertilizer-flow loss or a verified, complete closure.
Will Hormuz disruption affect U.S. fertilizer prices?
It can, through two channels: interrupted or more difficult trade in fertilizer products that originate in the Gulf, and wider energy and freight cost increases that can affect fertilizer production and transport. The size and duration of any U.S. price effect depend on how long disruption lasts, when buyers need supplies, and how inventories and trade routes adjust.
The price figures available are historical, not current October 2026 quotes. A USDA-authored analysis republished by Successful Farming/Farmdoc on March 23, 2026, reported selected Gulf Coast fertilizer prices through March 17. FAO reported on April 28 that U.S. urea prices had risen 52% by mid-April; it also described a nearly 20% rise in Middle Eastern granular urea prices within one week during the early shock. Neither figure establishes today’s price, a farm-level quote, or a continuing weekly increase.
That distinction matters for farm budgets and household finances. Higher input costs can squeeze farm margins, but the available evidence does not quantify how much a fertilizer shock would add to U.S. grocery prices or when any effect would reach consumers.

Which U.S. fertilizer products are most exposed?
The USDA-credited Farmdoc analysis estimates the shares below from 2023 sourcing. These are historical shares of U.S. consumption, not estimates of the share currently unavailable.
| Product | 2023 direct Gulf exposure | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Urea | 17% of U.S. consumption came from the Persian Gulf | Among the clearest direct exposures in the analysis; a disruption can put pressure on imported supply and prices. |
| DAP/MAP | 20% of U.S. consumption came from the Persian Gulf | These phosphate fertilizers had Gulf-origin supply, primarily from Saudi Arabia, according to the analysis. |
| Potash | Negligible direct Persian Gulf exposure | The analysis says U.S. potash imports do not depend on Hormuz; indirect energy or freight effects may still matter. |
| Anhydrous ammonia | Negligible direct Persian Gulf exposure | Substantial U.S. domestic production limits direct Gulf exposure, though broader cost pressures can still reach the market. |
Product matters: a risk to imported urea or DAP/MAP should not be generalized into a claim that all U.S. fertilizer supply depends on the strait. Conversely, low direct exposure does not insulate a product from higher energy, shipping, or other input costs.

Could U.S. farmers face shortages?
A brief interruption
Farmdoc’s scenario analysis says a short disruption is more consistent with a temporary price spike than a broad, sustained shortage. That is a scenario, not a guarantee: local availability can still vary with supplier stocks, delivery routes, and the timing of purchases.
A prolonged disruption
A longer closure or sustained shipping disruption could tighten selected fertilizer markets as trade routes adjust and inventories are drawn down. Farmdoc describes higher input costs and tighter availability in some products as risks to farm margins, with more severe effects possible at the ends of supply chains. These are conditional outlooks, not verified outcomes for every region or farm.

What the maritime updates establish
The International Maritime Organization’s October 4, 2026 update described regional instability as ongoing and said around 20,000 seafarers were affected; its voluntary ship and seafarer evacuation plan was paused. The page listed incident updates through October 6. This is evidence of an active maritime and safety situation, not a fertilizer cargo count or a live measure of U.S. supply. A WTO/AXSMarine tracker description notes that AIS-based shipment data can miss parts of voyages when vessels stop transmitting, so apparent traffic volumes may be incomplete.
Why delivery timing can matter as much as price
Fertilizer is not interchangeable with cash in a farm budget: it must be available for the crop and application window in which it is needed. At a May 7, 2026 meeting, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu said, “Agriculture operates within a crop calendar that cannot be postponed.” He warned that delayed delivery can mean reduced or abandoned application.

- FEEDS ALL PLANTS: Miracle-Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food is a plant fertilizer that feeds all outdoor, in-ground and indoor plants, including roses, flowers, houseplants, vegetables, and trees
- PROMOTES GROWTH: Use this all-purpose plant food outdoors and indoors to grow bigger, more beautiful plants (vs unfed plants); starts working instantly to promote quick, beautiful results
- NPK: 24-8-16 outdoor and indoor plant food contains Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) which are key nutrients plants need to thrive
- APPLICATION: To use as plant food indoors, mix 1/2 tsp per gallon of water in a watering can; to feed outdoor plants, mix 1-1/2 tbsp per 1-1/2 gallon of water in any watering can or use with the Miracle-Gro Garden Feeder
- COVERAGE: One 3 lb. container of Miracle-Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food can be used as an outdoor and indoor plant food for houseplants, vegetables, flowers, trees, roses and more; feeds approximately 1,200 sq. ft. of garden area
For U.S. farms, that makes the crop calendar a key part of the risk. A delayed shipment is not automatically a yield loss everywhere: consequences depend on the crop, nutrient plan, location, and whether the product arrives before the relevant application period. The evidence supports a risk of reduced yield potential when timing is missed, not a guaranteed outcome for every farm.

- Confirm product availability and expected delivery timing with established suppliers, rather than relying on national price headlines as a proxy for local stock.
- Review the farm’s crop-specific nutrient plan and application windows with a qualified agronomist or adviser.
- Do not substitute fertilizer products or change application rates without agronomic guidance; products differ in nutrient content and role.
- When comparing offers, distinguish a quoted price from a delivered price and check the delivery date against the crop’s needs.
The FAO’s May 2026 recommendations include keeping supply chains functioning, facilitating alternative trade routes, avoiding export restrictions, supporting farmer access to inputs, and improving market monitoring. It also calls for longer-term diversification of fertilizer and energy sources. These are FAO recommendations, not evidence that a particular U.S. policy or supply arrangement is already in place.

What is not yet clear about October prices and supply
The available figures do not establish October 2026 U.S. farm-level fertilizer prices, regional inventory, or an exact volume of fertilizer shipments affected by the maritime disruption. Spring price observations should not be presented as October prices, and the IMO’s maritime update does not fill that market-data gap. For a purchase decision, a current local supplier quote and delivery commitment are more useful than extrapolating from those older national or regional observations.
