Starbucks launched Protein Cold Foam and protein-boosted lattes in U.S. and Canadian coffeehouses on September 29, 2025; they are no longer upcoming products. The café options use dairy whey, and their protein amounts depend on the drink, size and recipe. A separate Starbucks Coffee & Protein bottled coffee line arrived in 2026, with different nutrition and pricing.

What Starbucks launched—and when

Starbucks announced its café protein drinks on September 2, 2025, and said they would be available starting September 29 in the United States and Canada. The launch-period announcement described them as year-round menu items. Starbucks’ current product information continues to describe protein drinks and customizations, though availability can vary by store. Starbucks’ launch announcement and availability announcement provide the original launch details.

The café menu has two distinct ways to add protein:

  • Protein Cold Foam: A protein-containing topping for cold drinks. Starbucks currently gives a range of 15–18 grams of protein per serving, depending on flavor.
  • Protein-boosted milk: Milk blended with whey protein, used in hot or iced dairy-based drinks such as lattes. Starbucks says its grande lattes and beverages made with protein-boosted milk provide about 27–36 grams of protein, depending on the beverage and recipe.

These are not interchangeable formats: foam is a topping, while protein-boosted milk replaces the milk in a drink.

How much protein is in each drink?

There is no single protein count for every Starbucks protein drink. Starbucks says nutrition varies with the recipe, size and customization. Its current FAQ lists 15–18 grams for Protein Cold Foam and 27–36 grams for lattes and beverages made with protein-boosted milk. Starbucks’ current product information also gives examples of recipe-specific totals.

Drink example Reported protein Basis
Iced Banana Cream Protein Matcha 24 g Grande; Starbucks recipe figure
Iced Vanilla Cream Protein Latte 26 g Grande; Starbucks recipe figure
Chocolate Cream Protein Cold Brew About 19 g Starbucks recipe figure; size not stated in the cited example
Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Matcha 28–36 g Range reported by Starbucks; depends on size and recipe
Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte 27–29 g Range reported by Starbucks; depends on size and recipe
Protein Matcha 28–36 g Range reported by Starbucks; depends on size and recipe
Vanilla Protein Latte 27–29 g Range reported by Starbucks; depends on size and recipe

Use the Starbucks app or nutrition information for the specific size and customization you plan to order; a drink name alone may not determine the final total.

What is in the protein?

Starbucks says the protein ingredient is whey protein isolate sourced from cow’s milk, blended with sunflower-derived lecithin to help it mix. The company says protein-boosted milk is made with 2% milk and whey; it is not offered as a standalone creamer or as a customizable milk base. Both the foam and protein-boosted milk are dairy-based, so neither is a plant-based protein option. Starbucks’ product FAQ describes the ingredients and ordering limits.

How to order, availability and price

Starbucks says Protein Cold Foam can be added to most cold coffee, iced tea or Refreshers. Protein-boosted milk can substitute for milk in hot or iced dairy-based beverages. Its current FAQ says café protein customizations are available only in the United States and Canada.

Customers seeking a plant-based packaged alternative can ask about Starbucks’ bottled Koia Vanilla Bean and Cacao Bean protein shakes, which Starbucks says may be added to espresso over ice. These are separate bottled products, not a plant-based version of the café’s whey-based foam or milk.

“Sugar-free” does not necessarily mean zero total sugar

Starbucks drink names that say “sugar-free” should not be read as a promise that the finished drink contains zero total sugar. On October 5, 2026, the Associated Press reported a consumer lawsuit alleging that eight U.S. Starbucks protein drinks marketed as sugar-free contain sugar. AP cited Starbucks online-menu figures of 16 grams of sugar for a 16-ounce Sugar-Free Caramel Protein Matcha and 21 grams for a 20-ounce version. These are total-sugar figures for the listed drinks, not a finding by a court about the lawsuit’s claims.

Starbucks told AP that the sugar comes from protein-boosted milk, that the company does not add sugar to the drinks, and that it uses sugar-free syrup for flavoring. It said, “We believe these claims have no merit,” and said it intends to defend itself. The allegations remain allegations; the case outcome is not established in the cited report. For a purchase decision, check the current nutrition listing for total and added sugars in the exact drink and size. The Associated Press report describes both the allegations and Starbucks’ response.

The bottled Starbucks Coffee & Protein line is a different product

In February 2026, PepsiCo announced Starbucks Coffee & Protein, a ready-to-drink bottled coffee developed through the Starbucks–PepsiCo North American Coffee Partnership. It is separate from café Protein Cold Foam and made-to-order protein lattes.

Product Protein and other nutrition stated at announcement Flavors and format Launch distribution and price
Café Protein Cold Foam 15–18 g protein per serving, depending on flavor; current Starbucks figure Topping added to eligible cold drinks U.S. and Canada café customizations; current price varies by store and is not stated as a fixed amount
Café protein-boosted milk drinks About 27–36 g protein for lattes and beverages using the milk, depending on recipe Made-to-order hot or iced drinks; 2% milk blended with whey U.S. and Canada café customizations; current price varies by store and is not stated as a fixed amount
Starbucks Coffee & Protein bottled coffee 22 g complete protein, 5 g prebiotic fiber and 2 g sugar per 12 fl oz bottle, according to PepsiCo’s announcement Classic Caffè and Caffè Mocha; ready to drink Announced for grocery, online, convenience-store and gas-station channels nationwide from March 23, 2026; suggested retail price $3.99 per bottle

The bottled product’s nutrition, package size, price and distribution were stated in PepsiCo’s February 26, 2026 announcement. The $3.99 figure is a suggested retail price from that release, not a claim about current shelf prices or store inventory.

What the protein trend figures do—and do not—show

Starbucks cited the 2025 IFIC Food & Health Survey in its launch announcement, saying 70% of Americans were trying to consume protein and that 8 in 10 prioritized adding it to their diet daily. PepsiCo cited the same survey in its 2026 release, describing 80% of Americans as prioritizing protein daily. These are company-cited survey findings and market context; they do not show that Starbucks drinks produce a health outcome.

Starbucks also said at the September 2025 launch that its cold-foam use had grown 23% year over year and appeared in one out of every seven beverages. Those are Starbucks’ launch-time company figures, not independent measurements of the protein drinks’ effects or current sales.
