Re:

Star Citizen Has Crossed $1 Billion in Community Funding

CIG announced that Star Citizen passed $1 billion in lifetime community funding. The milestone is not the same as the company’s annual income or a standalone audited development budget.

Yes. Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) announced on June 2, 2026, that Star Citizen had passed $1 billion in lifetime community funding after more than 12 years of support. The announcement confirms the milestone, but does not give an exact crossing-day total or a current precise counter reading.

What the $1 billion milestone counts

CIG’s announcement describes the figure as “lifetime funding from our community.” It is a cumulative milestone, not an audited standalone budget for Star Citizen. The announcement does not state how much of the funding was allocated to Star Citizen versus Squadron 42, which CIG develops in the same universe.

CIG’s public funding tracker presents the project as crowd-funded and says pledged money goes directly to development. CIG’s financial commentary describes the tracker’s “Pledges / Sales (from Counter)” as net receipts from backers and customers.

What people buy through the counter

In its 2024 accounting commentary, CIG said most counter sales that year came from starter packs granting access to the Star Citizen alpha, along with spaceships and digital items delivered and playable in the game. A smaller share came from concept-ship pledges. These are purchases and pledges connected to the game, not simply donations with no associated digital goods.

Why $1 billion is not the same as CIG’s total income

The community-funding counter is not a complete measure of company income. CIG reports subscriptions and other income separately, and its 2023 financial explanation says exchange differences and small items such as shipping charges on physical goods are outside the counter, with differences reflected in the final accounting income line.

For its 2024 accounting year, CIG reported the following annual figures. They provide company-income context, but they are not a breakdown of the cumulative $1 billion milestone.

2024 income category CIG-reported amount What it represents
Pledge and counter income $116.3 million Annual receipts recorded through the funding counter
Subscription income $7.3 million Subscriptions, reported separately from counter income
Other income $23.0 million Includes development incentives, partnership and hardware/software vendor income, and Turbulent-related income
Total income $146.6 million Annual total across the categories CIG reported

These are CIG’s figures for its 2024 accounting year, as presented in its CFO commentary on the 2024 accounting. CIG said its principal product remained in pre-alpha during that year. The annual $146.6 million total and the lifetime $1 billion community-funding milestone measure different things and cover different periods.

What the announcement does not establish

  • Exact crossing-day total: CIG confirmed that the threshold had been crossed but did not publish the precise amount at that moment.
  • Current live total: The official tracker is the place to check public funding statistics, but its counter was not readable in the retrieved page content. No precise present-day figure can be confirmed here.
  • Backer count: The milestone announcement does not disclose how many individual backers contributed.
  • Project-by-project allocation: CIG develops both Star Citizen and Squadron 42, but the announcement does not divide the milestone between them.

The milestone is therefore best understood as CIG’s announcement that lifetime community funding for Star Citizen passed $1 billion—not as a published audit of the game’s standalone development budget or a complete accounting of CIG’s income.

The milestone was announced by Cloud Imperium Games on June 2, 2026. Annual income figures and the company’s explanation of counter sales come from its 2024 accounting commentary; the limits of the counter’s coverage are described in its 2023 financial explanation. The developer’s company overview identifies both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 as projects it develops.
