Variety reported that its 10-episode first season did not appear on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming charts. The series is set to end after its already-ordered second season, but the available reporting does not establish why.
What “loses steam” means for the show
“Loses steam” is a plausible question, not a measured audience trend. The available performance evidence is that the first season did not rank on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming viewership charts, according to Variety’s report. That indicates the show did not reach that chart’s visibility threshold during the period covered. It does not reveal how many people watched, whether viewership fell from episode to episode, or how the show compared with titles outside the chart.

A separate use of the phrase should not be confused with ratings: a Tell-Tale TV review described one storyline in episode seven as losing steam. That was a criticism of the storyline, not a finding about the series’ audience.
What is known about its audience—and what is not
- Known: Variety reported that season one did not appear in Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming charts.
- Not established: a total audience figure, an episode-by-episode trend, or a quantified season-long decline.
- Not established: that ratings caused the decision to end the series after season two.
Chart absence is a limited signal, not a complete performance report. Nielsen’s Top 10 is a ranking, and not appearing on it cannot by itself show whether a show had a smaller audience than expected, lost viewers over time, or performed well on other measures. The cited reporting supplies no audience total to fill in those gaps.

Was Starfleet Academy canceled?
The series was renewed for season two on October 19, 2024, while season one was still in production, as Paramount Press Express announced. The renewal therefore predates the premiere and cannot be treated as a response to season-one audience performance.
Later, Variety reported that the series would end after season two; TVLine reported the same planned conclusion. In practical terms, season two is the final season according to that trade reporting. The official Paramount Global Content listing describes the series as renewed for season two, while the reports say the overall run will conclude after it. The sources do not provide an official causal explanation for the ending, so calling it a ratings cancellation goes beyond what is established.
