Some former Spirit Airlines A320neos were acquired for dismantling and parts recovery, but the available announcements do not show that every rejected aircraft—or the entire fleet—was scrapped. “Rejected” referred to lease agreements, not a decision to destroy each airframe.
What “rejected” means—and what happened to the aircraft
In Spirit’s March 2026 restructuring framework, rejecting an aircraft lease meant changing the airline’s lease obligations. It did not, by itself, mean that the aircraft was physically destroyed. The plan contemplated keeping some A320neo-family aircraft as well as A320ceos, and described short-term leases for certain PW1100G-JM engines previously installed on aircraft whose leases Spirit had rejected. Two former Spirit A320neos were specifically acquired for teardown by EirTrade Aviation in partnership with RESIDCO. EirTrade identified them as N950NK (MSN 10769) and N959NK (MSN 10921), and said disassembly was underway. The company described the airframes as four and 3.5 years old, respectively; those ages are EirTrade’s stated figures. How the plans changed

- May 2, 2026: Spirit announced an orderly wind-down of operations, saying it could not obtain the additional liquidity it considered necessary to keep operating. Spirit announcement

What can happen to an aircraft leaving an airline’s fleet?
There are several possible outcomes, and they are not interchangeable:
- Return or transfer: An aircraft may go back to its lessor or be sold or leased to another operator. The cited announcements do not establish how many former Spirit aircraft took this route.
- Continued operation: Spirit’s March restructuring proposal contemplated retaining some A320neo-family aircraft, but the later wind-down overtook that plan. Restructuring agreement Spirit wind-down announcement
- Teardown for parts: A dismantled aircraft can yield components that are repaired and sold or exchanged. EirTrade and Setna iO documented acquisitions for teardown, but those examples do not amount to a complete fleet inventory. EirTrade Aviation Setna iO
“Parted out” or “dismantled for parts” is more precise than “scrapped” for the documented cases: EirTrade described recovering usable components for the market, not simply turning the whole aircraft into waste. The cited sources do not establish that engine problems caused these teardowns.

Does this mean Spirit’s A320neo fleet was scrapped?
No fleet-wide conclusion is supported. The announcements establish teardown activity involving specific former Spirit A320neos and a broader liquidation in which aircraft, engines and parts were to be sold.
