That did not mean Spirit had paid off all its obligations or secured a lasting return to independent operations: it later entered a second Chapter 11 case, stopped flying in 2026 and moved into liquidation.
What Spirit’s first bankruptcy exit included
On March 12, 2025, Spirit Aviation Holdings, Inc., Spirit Airlines’ parent, announced that it had emerged from financial restructuring. Its plan changed the company’s capital structure through debt-for-equity conversion, new investment and new borrowing.

Thus, the headline’s “$795 million debt reduction” is shorthand for a specific debt-for-equity transaction. It should not be read as the total amount of Spirit’s debt and leases, nor as the amount of cash the company used to repay creditors.
What happened to Spirit’s shares
Spirit said its pre-emergence common stock was canceled and that new shares were held by the company’s new owners. The SEC filing says trading in the successor company’s shares began on NYSE American under the symbol FLYY on April 29, 2025. Those are historical details about the restructuring, not a current investment opportunity or indication that the airline remains in business. Spirit’s announcement; SEC filing

Why pre- and post-bankruptcy financial statements are not directly comparable
Spirit adopted fresh start accounting when it emerged. Its SEC filing says this established a new basis of accounting and a new reporting entity. As a result, financial statements after March 12, 2025 are not comparable to those before emergence without adjustments and a clear explanation of the accounting changes. A simple comparison of revenue, debt, assets or results across that date can therefore mislead. SEC filing dated March 12, 2025

Spirit’s 2025 emergence was not its final bankruptcy proceeding. A March 2026 filing describes a restructuring support agreement with creditor groups as part of a proposed plan in a second Chapter 11 case. Spirit filing dated March 2026

By May 2026, Spirit had stopped flying. The Associated Press reported that a bankruptcy judge authorized a rapid wind-down and liquidation, with asset sales intended to fund the process. In August 2026, Axios reported that Spirit had ceased operations after failing to emerge from the second Chapter 11 case, while bankruptcy asset dispositions continued. At the time of its 2025 announcement, CEO Ted Christie said, “We’re pleased to complete our streamlined restructuring and emerge in a stronger financial position to continue our transformation and investments in the Guest experience.” That was management’s assessment at the time, not proof that the restructuring preserved Spirit’s operations; the subsequent bankruptcy and liquidation provide the later context.
