Steve and Connie Ballmer gave $7 million in early April 2020 to a political action committee connected to Everytown for Gun Safety, according to GeekWire’s July 16, 2020 report. The article says a Ballmer Group spokesperson confirmed the gift came from both Ballmers, although the Federal Election Commission records cited by GeekWire listed Steve Ballmer alone as the contributor.

What the 2020 report says about the $7 million gift

GeekWire reported that the contribution was made in early April 2020 to a political action committee connected to Everytown for Gun Safety. The report described it as believed to be the Ballmers’ largest political contribution at that point, and said the FEC records indicated it was their largest political donation yet. Those descriptions reflect the reporting and records available in 2020, not a verified current lifetime ranking.

The story does not provide the PAC’s exact name. It is therefore more precise to describe the recipient as an Everytown-connected political action committee than to assign it a specific name.

Why the report names both Ballmers but the FEC record names one

The distinction is between GeekWire’s account of what a spokesperson confirmed and the contributor field in the records it cited. A Ballmer Group spokesperson confirmed the contribution and attributed it to Steve and Connie Ballmer; the FEC records listed Steve Ballmer alone as the contributor. The report does not quote the spokesperson directly, so there is no verbatim statement to reproduce.

Everytown’s connection to Michael Bloomberg

GeekWire characterized Everytown for Gun Safety as a national gun-control group co-founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The organization’s own Action Fund homepage describes its advocacy for gun-safety measures in state legislatures across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Everytown’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns leadership page identifies Bloomberg as the coalition’s founding chair and says he co-founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns with then-Boston Mayor Tom Menino in 2006. That page documents the coalition’s history; it does not establish that Bloomberg alone founded every organization or entity associated with Everytown.
