Southwest announced several 2025 schedule changes, but the exact cross-country route named in a December 17, 2024, Travel + Leisure headline cannot be verified from the accessible article listing. The airline’s own releases identify a number of new and expanded routes, but neither confirms which one that headline meant. Here is what those announcements establish—and what they do not.
Can the new cross-country route be identified?
Not from the available article listing or Southwest’s two accessible schedule announcements. The Travel + Leisure listing displays the headline “Southwest’s 2025 Schedule Is Here — and It Includes a New Cross-country Route” and a December 17, 2024 date, but does not expose the article body. Southwest’s October 2024 and February 2025 releases discuss schedule changes without identifying a route as the one in that headline. Naming a particular route as the answer would therefore be a guess.

What Southwest announced for its 2025 schedule
The routes below were described in Southwest’s February 6, 2025 schedule-extension announcement. They are scheduled-service announcements from that date, not confirmation that flights remain available today. The release extended the bookable schedule through November 1, 2025.
| Route or change | Start date and frequency announced |
|---|---|
| San Diego–Fresno nonstop | Beginning October 2, 2025; daily |
| San Diego–Tampa | Expanded from Saturdays to Thursdays through Mondays |
| Austin–Jacksonville nonstop | Beginning October 2, 2025; Sunday through Friday |
| Austin–Milwaukee nonstop | Beginning March 6, 2025; weekdays |
| Austin–Reno nonstop | Beginning March 6, 2025; Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, with daily service beginning June 5 |
| Nashville–Indianapolis nonstop | Beginning March 6, 2025; daily |
| Sacramento–Tucson nonstop | Beginning March 6, 2025; weekends |
The same release listed Saturday international service beginning March 8, 2025: Nashville to Punta Cana and Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos, and Sacramento to Puerto Vallarta. It also said Southwest would operate up to 128 daily flights from Austin during peak travel days in October 2025. That figure applied to the announced peak schedule, not to all days or to the airline’s current operation. See Southwest’s February 6, 2025 announcement for the full release.

What the summer 2025 schedule announcement said
On October 30, 2024, Southwest extended its schedule through August 4, 2025. The airline said the summer 2025 schedule included 33 overnight flights, with eastbound service from Hawaii and West Coast cities to Southwest cities. It also listed proposed new redeye markets beginning June 5 and seasonal routes expected to resume or expand. The 33-flight figure described that announced summer schedule; it is not a current count. The release does not establish the specific cross-country route in the Travel + Leisure headline. Details are in Southwest’s October 30, 2024 announcement.

Announcements describe plans for a particular schedule period. To check whether a specific flight is available for your dates, search Southwest’s booking system using the exact origin, destination, and travel dates. Confirm the departure date, nonstop status, and operating days before making plans; a route announcement alone does not establish present-day availability.
