Theo Baker’s Book Examines Stanford’s ‘Money-Soaked’ Startup Culture

Stanford student journalist Theo Baker’s How to Rule the World examines how venture capital, money and access shape startup ambitions among some Stanford students. “Money-soaked” is Baker’s own description of the subculture, not a measured finding about Stanford students as a whole. The book was published on May 19, 2026, according to its publisher.

Who is Theo Baker?

Baker is a Stanford student journalist whose early reporting for The Stanford Daily raised allegations of research misconduct associated with Stanford president Marc Tessier-Lavigne. TechCrunch reported that Tessier-Lavigne resigned; that fact alone should not be taken to resolve every allegation.

In a 2025 interview with Axios, Baker described watching peers be encouraged to cut corners and offered enormous wealth by people seeking to use their talent. He connected that experience with his reporting on a system he believed had failed to catch misconduct. Those are Baker’s reflections, not a statistical assessment of student conduct.

What does “money-soaked” mean in this story?

The phrase refers to the Stanford subculture Baker says he observed, where venture capitalists cultivate selected undergraduates with money, access and attention—sometimes before those students have business ideas. TechCrunch’s preview of the book described slush funds, shell companies, yacht parties and funding offers as part of the world Baker investigates.

That account is a reported subject of the book, not evidence that these practices are typical of all Stanford students or Silicon Valley investors. The reporting available here does not establish how prevalent the behavior is across the university or the startup industry.

What does Baker’s book cover?

How to Rule the World combines Baker’s coming-of-age story with an examination of Stanford, student ambition and technology wealth. Penguin Random House frames it as an account of how access and money intersect with the university’s relationship to the technology industry, alongside Baker’s earlier investigation. That description is the publisher’s framing.

Axios reported that Baker conducted more than 250 interviews for the book, including conversations with students, CEOs, venture capitalists, Nobel laureates, professors, athletes, scientific sleuths, and three Stanford presidents and three provosts. The number is Axios’s reported count, not an independently audited dataset or a measure of how widespread the book’s subject is.

Baker told Axios that books including Mark Leibovich’s This Town and Scott Turow’s One L inspired him. Axios also reported that he spent about two months writing at the Yaddo writers’ retreat.

Why the story matters to personal finance

The subject is not personal-finance advice or a guide to raising startup capital. Its relevance is the way early access to wealth and influential networks can shape choices about ambition, risk and opportunity. Baker’s account raises questions about who gets those opportunities and on what terms, but the reporting does not quantify the financial effects or show how representative his examples are.
