Southampton’s sale of Romeo Lavia to Chelsea generated a reported £53 million initial fee, but Southampton did not keep all of it: Manchester City was due £10.6 million under a sell-on clause. Using the reported figures, Southampton’s proceeds after that payment were about £42.4 million. Subtracting the £10.5 million Southampton reportedly paid to sign him gives an estimated £31.9 million spread before other costs and accounting adjustments—not an audited profit figure. Chelsea’s injury setbacks are part of Lavia’s story, but the club’s latest cited update, on 18 September 2026, described a strong start to the 2026–27 season.
What Southampton reportedly received for Lavia
Southampton confirmed on 18 August 2023 that Lavia had completed a transfer to Chelsea, describing Chelsea’s proposal as a “substantial offer.” The club did not disclose the fee in its announcement. The amounts below come from BBC Sport’s report on the transfer, not Southampton’s confirmation.
| Transfer figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| £53m | Initial fee Chelsea reportedly paid Southampton, according to BBC Sport in 2023. |
| Up to £5m | Possible add-ons reported by BBC Sport in 2023; these were additional to the initial fee, not a guaranteed payment. |
| £10.6m | Amount BBC Sport reported Manchester City would receive under a sell-on clause, equal to 20% of the initial £53m fee. |
| £10.5m | Initial amount Southampton reportedly paid Manchester City for Lavia in July 2022, according to BBC Sport. |

How large was Southampton’s windfall?
On the reported figures, the calculation is straightforward but should not be mistaken for a club-accounting result:

- Cool Southampton soccer jersey inspired design; Perfect Southampton football and soccer gift
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Start with the reported £53m initial Chelsea fee.
- Subtract Manchester City’s reported £10.6m sell-on payment: about £42.4m remains before other costs.
- Subtract Southampton’s reported £10.5m initial purchase price: the difference is about £31.9m.
That £31.9m is a simple estimate of the difference between two reported transfer amounts after the sell-on payment. It does not account for other costs, add-ons, or accounting treatment, and the sources do not provide an independently audited net-profit figure for Southampton. The possible £5m in add-ons should not be added to Southampton’s guaranteed proceeds unless and until those conditional payments are established.
What happened in the transfer, and what does £53m mean?
Lavia joined Southampton from Manchester City in July 2022 for a reported initial £10.5m. After one season, Southampton confirmed his move to Chelsea on 18 August 2023. BBC Sport reported that Chelsea’s initial fee was £53m, with up to £5m in add-ons, and that Liverpool had previously had a bid rejected.

The £53m is therefore the reported initial fee, not a confirmed all-in total. The BBC’s headline described the deal as £58m by combining the initial fee and maximum add-ons; the add-ons were potential extra payments. Southampton’s official announcement counted 34 appearances for the club across all competitions. BBC Sport’s photo caption separately gave 29 Premier League appearances in 2022–23, a narrower competition-specific total.
Did Chelsea’s signing bring “pain” as well as promise?
The injury concerns are real, but any appearance or missed-match total needs a date attached. On 10 November 2025, BBC Sport reported that Lavia had a quadriceps injury and, at that point, had made 29 Chelsea appearances and missed 88 matches over two and a half seasons. Those figures describe the position at the time of that report, not his current career totals. See BBC Sport’s November 2025 report.

In a feature published on 18 September 2026, Chelsea said Lavia had started the club’s opening four Premier League fixtures of the 2026–27 season and described him as making a strong start. The club also acknowledged that injuries had made his time at Stamford Bridge stop-start. This is Chelsea’s account, not an independent assessment, and four starts at the beginning of a season do not establish that his injury problems are over. The feature is at Chelsea FC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Chelsea paid a large fee
The reported transfer price shows what Chelsea agreed to pay Southampton; it does not, by itself, prove that the deal succeeded or failed on the pitch. The BBC report described Lavia as a Belgium midfielder and quoted then-manager Mauricio Pochettino calling him a “quality player” who was “perfect for this project.” The subsequent injury interruptions help explain the frustration around his Chelsea spell, while the club’s September 2026 account points to a more encouraging start to the current league campaign. Neither the fee nor those snapshots alone settle his long-term value to Chelsea.
