If UPS misses the expected delivery time, check the tracking page and the service’s committed delivery time. A late package does not automatically qualify for a refund: UPS’s U.S. Service Guarantee currently covers only specified services, and conditions and exclusions apply. For a typical Ground delivery, the driver may still arrive as late as 9 p.m. or later.
First, check whether the delivery window has actually passed
UPS tracking on UPS.com provides the latest shipment status and estimated delivery information. For U.S. Ground shipments, UPS says residential deliveries generally take place Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., sometimes later; business deliveries generally occur during normal business hours. Ground delivery cannot be scheduled for a specific time. UPS Tracking Support
If tracking says “Out for Delivery,” allow for the stated window before treating the package as missed. UPS says that if it cannot complete an out-for-delivery attempt, it will try again the next business day. During the holiday season, UPS says drivers may deliver later than 9 p.m. UPS Help and Support Center
What to do when UPS is late
- Review tracking. Check the latest scan and estimated delivery details on UPS.com; those are UPS’s most up-to-date shipment status information. UPS Tracking Support
- If it is still out for delivery, wait through the applicable window. For Ground shipments, a residential delivery may arrive as late as 9 p.m. or later. A specific delivery time cannot be scheduled for Ground. UPS Tracking Support
- Check again the next business day if UPS could not deliver. UPS says it will make another attempt the next business day when it cannot deliver an out-for-delivery package. UPS Tracking Support
- Use available delivery-change options if you need to redirect or reschedule it. UPS My Choice or a one-time guest change may offer options, but the shipper can restrict them. UPS delivery change options
- Contact the shipper if the package is missing or you need help with a claim. Claim access and available options may depend on the shipper’s account. UPS File a Claim
When a late UPS delivery may qualify for a refund
UPS calls its program the Service Guarantee. As of October 8, 2026, its U.S. page lists these domestic services as covered: UPS Next Day Air Early, UPS Next Day Air, UPS Next Day Air Saver, and UPS 2nd Day Air A.M. The listed international services are UPS Worldwide Express Plus, Worldwide Express, Worldwide Express NA1, Worldwide Express Saver, Worldwide Saver, Worldwide Express Freight Midday, and Worldwide Express Freight. UPS Next Day Air Saver has a guaranteed delivery time of end of day—11:59 p.m.—on its guaranteed day. UPS says the guarantee remains suspended for all other UPS shipments and services not listed, from any origin to any destination. Coverage does not by itself establish that a refund is due. UPS says the guarantee is subject to conditions, exclusions, and limitations; the specific service terms and shipment details determine whether it applies. A tracking estimate or a delivery later than expected is not enough on its own to promise eligibility. UPS directs customers to its Tariff/Terms and Conditions for details. UPS Service Guarantee
Late delivery is different from a lost or damaged package
A possible refund under the Service Guarantee is not the same process as a claim for loss, damage, or a missing collect-on-delivery (COD) payment. UPS’s U.S. File a Claim guidance says to start a claim within 60 days of scheduled delivery for those specified loss, damage, or COD issues. That 60-day period is not stated as a universal deadline for requesting a refund because of late delivery. UPS File a Claim

For a claim, UPS asks customers to have the tracking number, keep an invoice that can establish the item’s value, and retain the contents and packaging if the item was damaged. For a package marked delivered but not found, UPS advises checking exterior doors, porches, patios, garages, and with neighbors, then contacting the seller to start a claim.
