Re:

Should Students Get Paid for Good Grades? What the Evidence Says

Cash rewards can help in some student incentive programs, but the evidence does not show that paying for report-card grades works reliably across subjects or families.

Paying students for good grades can help in some settings, but it is not a reliably effective strategy for every student or subject. Research finds more promise in structured incentives tied to specific learning activities and paired with academic support than in simply paying for a report-card result. Whether it makes sense at home depends on the child, the goal and the agreement—not on a universal rule.

What research says about paying students

Studies of cash incentives show mixed, subject-specific results. A 2014 NORC review of 15 studies and 18 independent treatment estimates found weakly positive effects on overall and mathematics achievement, but no average effect on reading or language arts, intrinsic motivation, attendance or self-reported study habits. NORC’s review also found that evidence about persistence and reward size was too limited or mixed to support a dependable rule.

A 2020 review of 21 U.S. and international studies found a similar subject pattern: positive effects on overall and mathematics test performance, but no effect on reading or language arts. It found mixed evidence about whether gains lasted, and stronger results when incentives were paired with academic support. Vi-Nhuan Le’s review in Teachers College Record emphasizes that results vary across programs.

These reviews combine studies with different ages, locations, subjects, reward rules and measures. A school program is not the same as a parent paying for report-card grades, so the findings cannot determine what will work for one family.

What earns the reward matters

A grade or test score is an outcome. Studying for a set period, completing practice problems or mastering a clearly defined skill are examples of learning inputs that a student can act on more directly. That distinction may matter: Roland G. Fryer Jr.’s working-paper summary reports that incentives tied to inputs raised achievement in the trials he studied, while incentives tied to outputs did not. The experiments covered more than 250 urban schools; the result is context-specific, not proof that any process-based reward will succeed. Fryer’s NBER working paper describes the trials.

Fryer’s later journal article examined randomized experiments in more than 200 urban schools across Dallas, New York and Chicago. Its abstract reports that the overall impact on achievement was statistically zero in each city, with a statistically significant effect only among English-speaking students in Dallas; the paper also notes limited statistical power. The Quarterly Journal of Economics article is a reminder that results from one incentive design or subgroup should not be generalized to all students.

Can rewards help without lasting?

A higher score while a reward is available does not necessarily mean a student has learned more deeply or will keep improving after payments stop. Test performance can reflect effort as well as knowledge: an experiment in two U.S. high schools and four Shanghai high schools found that incentives improved U.S. students’ performance on low-stakes tests, but not that of the participating Shanghai students. The authors discussed the implications for interpreting international comparisons. The 2019 American Economic Review: Insights study illustrates why test results should be interpreted in context.

Durability is unsettled overall. In one randomized experiment with high-school freshmen, average effects were modest, but students near an achievement threshold had a large, statistically significant impact and continued to outperform the control group one year after incentives ended. That subgroup finding is promising, but it does not establish that gains persist for every student or program. The study’s NBER page describes the experiment.

Does paying for grades damage motivation?

The available evidence does not support the claim that cash inherently destroys students’ motivation. The NORC review found no average effect on intrinsic motivation, but that does not mean every student reacts the same way or that motivation will be unaffected in every household. Rewards, student age, expectations and the way a family talks about learning can differ substantially from the conditions in school studies.

Likewise, a score increase alone is not proof of deeper understanding, and a study finding no average effect does not show that no individual student responds. Consider whether the goal is a temporary push, a specific learning habit or sustained mastery, and judge progress against that goal rather than a single grade.

How families can decide whether to try it

If a family chooses to experiment with a reward, treat it as a transparent household agreement—not a proven formula. Keep the goal specific and achievable, make clear what earns the reward and when it is delivered, and include practical support such as time, materials or help with difficult work. Those are sensible ways to make expectations clear; research does not establish a best amount, schedule or family payment scheme.

  • Choose a controllable target. A defined learning activity or mastered objective may be easier for a student to act on than a final grade shaped by many factors.
  • Pair the incentive with support. Set aside time, offer feedback or help the student access academic assistance rather than making money the only intervention.
  • Review what changed. Look beyond the grade to whether the student understood the material, built a workable routine and can continue without the reward.
  • Keep the agreement proportionate. A reward should not turn every assignment or family conversation into a negotiation; adjust or stop the arrangement if it creates conflict or misses the learning goal.

Praise, feedback and support can be part of the agreement, but the reviewed evidence does not establish that a particular household approach will produce a specific result.

How to interpret the evidence

The studies measure different things, including mathematics, reading and language arts, overall test performance, attendance and motivation. They also vary in age group, location, reward rules and whether academic support was included. A finding about a school program cannot settle a family’s decision, and the available evidence does not identify an ideal cash amount or schedule.

For students or schools, the practical takeaway is conditional: incentives may help under particular designs, especially when linked to concrete learning inputs and paired with academic support. Paying simply for a high grade is not a dependable across-the-board strategy, and any short-term test gain should be distinguished from learning that lasts after payments end.
