The club’s ownership changed in May 2026, when Arise Capital Partners completed a deal to acquire it from administration. The 2025 headline about a Textor takeover has therefore been overtaken by events—and the available evidence does not show Owls players divided over his bid.
Is John Textor buying Sheffield Wednesday?
There is no confirmed current Textor offer in the available reporting. The FourFourTwo search result associated with the headline is dated 8 October 2025, but the page itself returned a 404 and its detailed claims could not be independently checked. It should be treated as an earlier report, not an update on the club’s present ownership.
Nor is there reliable evidence here that Sheffield Wednesday players were divided over a Textor takeover. The later player information available is the club’s end-of-season retained-list notice, which discusses specific contract situations without linking them to Textor.
Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?
On 2 May 2026, the English Football League said administrators BTG had formally concluded an agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC to transfer the club’s assets. The consortium was led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The EFL said Wednesday was no longer regarded as being in administration. The EFL’s ownership announcement and BBC Sport’s report both identify Arise as the buyer.

The transfer concluded Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership. The change was a completed acquisition, not a reported future bid by Textor.
What does the ownership change mean for spending and player registrations?
The EFL said Wednesday would remain under a budget restriction for the next two seasons. It may register new players only in line with the terms of a business plan agreed jointly with the new ownership. The EFL’s announcement does not state a transfer budget or quantify the effect on individual signings.

Acquisitions of control are subject to EFL and Independent Football Regulator requirements, according to the EFL’s governance guidance. The IFR’s Owners, Directors and Senior Executives regime began on 5 May 2026. When assessing any future ownership claim, a headline alone is not evidence of a deal: regulatory requirements, funding and business-plan commitments, and the impact on player registrations all matter.
Which Sheffield Wednesday players are staying?
The club’s retained-list notice at the end of 2025/26 said discussions were ongoing with Max Lowe. Mackenzie Maltby and Gui Siqueira were invited back to pre-season training, with a view to potentially extending their stays. The club’s notice does not connect these decisions to Textor or report a split among the squad.

That notice provides limited contract context, not a full account of every player’s future. It should not be used to infer a transfer, a contract extension, or a player’s position on a takeover.

Wednesday were relegated to League One after losing to Sheffield United on 22 February 2026, with 13 matches remaining, BBC Sport reported. The report also said most senior players had been sold either by Chansiri or during the administration process. Those events preceded the club’s May exit from administration under Arise’s ownership; they do not establish any link between the squad and a Textor bid. BBC Sport’s relegation report covers the February result and its context.

After the ownership deal, IFR chair David Kogan described it as good news for the club, community and fans who had endured a long period of uncertainty, while saying Wednesday’s experience illustrated why the regulator was established. BBC Sport reported that the IFR would assess new owners, directors and senior executives in the top five divisions. BBC Sport’s report on the takeover includes Kogan’s remarks.
