Sheffield Wednesday: What John Textor Said—and Who Eventually Bought the Club

John Textor’s reported interest did not become a takeover. The EFL confirmed Sheffield Wednesday’s assets transferred to Arise Capital Partners in May 2026, with a further 15-point deduction waived and a two-season budget restriction remaining.

John Textor said in October 2025 that Sheffield Wednesday was one of the clubs he was considering, but described the situation as complicated and cautioned that his involvement had been overstated. He did not complete a takeover. In May 2026, the EFL confirmed that the club’s assets had transferred to Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch, and that Wednesday had exited administration.

What John Textor said about Sheffield Wednesday

In an interview excerpt reported by Fan Banter on 8 October 2025, Textor said: “I would say it’s just really complicated. You know, Wednesday is one of the clubs that we’re looking at.”

He also reportedly said his involvement had been overstated, adding: “We’re one of I think three or four groups that are getting an appropriate amount of open mindedness from the owner.” The remarks described consideration and discussions, not a confirmed offer or agreement. The available account is Fan Banter’s report of interview excerpts; a primary transcript was not available.

Did John Textor buy Sheffield Wednesday?

No. Textor’s reported interest in October 2025 did not result in a completed purchase. The eventual buyer was Arise Capital Partners LLC. The EFL confirmed on 2 May 2026 that the administrators had agreed to transfer the club’s assets to Arise and that the club, under its new ownership, was no longer in administration. The administrators’ announcement on 5 May named David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin as the consortium members.

How administration and the points deductions fit together

On 24 October 2025, the EFL said it had received formal notice that owner Dejphon Chansiri had taken steps to appoint administrators to the club and the company that owns Hillsborough. The EFL said administration triggered an automatic 12-point deduction and created an opportunity to progress a sale.

The point figures refer to different stages and proceedings; they should not be treated as interchangeable:

Figure What it referred to Timing and source
12 points Automatic deduction triggered by administration EFL statement, 24 October 2025
18 points Total deductions that the EFL said had resulted from administration and separate disciplinary proceedings during the 2025/26 season EFL statement, 19 December 2025
15 points A further deduction considered when the club exited administration; the EFL exercised its discretion not to impose it EFL statement, 2 May 2026

The 15-point decision was not a reversal of the 18-point season tally. The EFL described it as a separate potential sanction associated with exit from administration.

What EFL conditions remain after the sale?

Although the EFL waived a further 15-point deduction on exit from administration, it said Wednesday would remain under a budget restriction for the next two seasons. Player signings must follow a business plan agreed jointly with the league, and applications to register players must comply with that plan. The sale therefore ended administration, but did not immediately remove league oversight of the club’s spending and registrations.

Was there a confirmed price or Textor bid?

No reliable purchase price or amount for a Textor offer was established in the cited announcements and reporting. Textor’s reported comments establish that Wednesday was among the clubs being considered, not that he submitted a bid or agreed a price.
