Sheffield Wednesday was taken over by Arise Capital Partners, a consortium led by David Storch—not John Textor. The English Football League confirmed on 2 May 2026 that the transfer was complete and the club was no longer in administration.
Who took over Sheffield Wednesday?
The buyer was Arise Capital Partners LLC. The EFL’s 2 May 2026 announcement confirmed the completed transfer and said the club under its new ownership had met league requirements. BBC Sport reported that the consortium was led by David Storch and included Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The acquisition ended Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
The EFL’s announcement is the primary source for completion and the league’s conditions; BBC Sport’s account supplies the reported consortium names and background.
Did John Textor buy Sheffield Wednesday?
No. The EFL identified Arise Capital Partners as the new owner in its completed-takeover announcement. That establishes who completed the purchase; it does not establish whether Textor ever explored a bid, and there is no basis here to claim that he did or did not.

Why the Crystal Palace description is outdated
Textor was described as Crystal Palace’s owner because he held a stake in the club. But BBC Sport reported that Woody Johnson completed the purchase of Textor’s 43% stake on 24 July 2025, before the Wednesday takeover. BBC Sport estimated the deal’s value at close to £190 million; that figure was an estimate, not a confirmed sale price. BBC Sport reported the Palace stake sale.
What happened to Wednesday during administration?
BBC Sport reported that Wednesday entered administration on 24 October 2025. The club had already been relegated to League One by the time the takeover was completed: on 22 February 2026, defeat at Sheffield United sealed relegation with 13 games remaining.

BBC Sport described the earlier sporting penalties as an immediate 12-point deduction for administration and a further six-point deduction linked to missed payments to players, staff, HMRC and transfer fees. It also reported that former owner Chansiri received a three-year ban from owning or directing an EFL club.

The EFL Board used its discretion under the Insolvency Policy and chose not to impose an additional 15-point deduction when Wednesday exited administration. The club remained subject to a budget restriction for the next two seasons, and new player registrations must comply with an agreed business plan. The decision not to add that penalty did not reverse the earlier deductions or the club’s relegation.
