Six Things IEEE Members Should Know About Group Term Life Insurance

The IEEE/AMBA guide outlines group and level-term options, but its terms and sample rates are dated. Learn what to compare and verify in current policy documents.

IEEE members considering group term life insurance should verify the current policy and quote before relying on advertised eligibility, rates, or application details. An IEEE/AMBA comparison guide describes three group-life options, but its figures are dated and its authors caution that it is only a brief description of each policy. The guide is useful for understanding what to compare—not as a substitute for current policy documents.

1. Group term life covers a defined risk; it is not permanent savings

Term life pays a death benefit if the insured person dies while the coverage is in force during the covered term. It is not a permanent savings policy. IEEE Spectrum’s 2018 article described the plan as guaranteeing payment of the amount of coverage upon the insured’s death during a specified term. Its further statement that coverage could be renewed until age 99 or allowed to expire is historical and has not been verified against a current certificate.

The IEEE Member Insurance Program continues to list term-life options, according to an IEEE Women in Engineering announcement dated October 2, 2026. That announcement also introduced a separate whole-life product; its terms should not be treated as terms of group term life.

2. The guide describes three options, but its terms need current confirmation

The IEEE/AMBA comparison guide, published in 2023, lists Group Term Life and two level-term options. These are guide-published details, not confirmation of current eligibility or policy provisions. The guide states: “This is only a brief description of each policy’s coverage.”

Option Eligibility listed in the guide Rates and post-guarantee terms listed
Group Term Life Applicants under age 65; coverage from $10,000 to $1,000,000 in $10,000 increments; termination age 100. Rates change annually as the insured enters the next five-year age band.
10-year level term Applicants under age 65. Initial rate guarantee for 10 years. The guide says a subsequent guaranteed term requires reapplication and is subject to then-current underwriting and age considerations.
20-year level term Applicants under age 55. Initial rate guarantee for 20 years. The guide says a subsequent guaranteed term requires reapplication and is subject to then-current underwriting and age considerations.

Before applying, confirm that these age limits, coverage amounts, rate mechanics, and renewal or reapplication terms still apply. The available guide does not establish current 2026 terms.

3. Compare the cost over the period you need coverage

An annually changing rate and a 10- or 20-year rate guarantee have different cost patterns. A level-term guarantee can make premiums more predictable during its initial period; Group Term Life’s listed age-band structure means rates may change as the insured moves into a new band. Neither structure alone establishes which option costs less over the time you need protection.

The IEEE/AMBA guide gives a sample of $17.46 per month for $100,000 of Group Term Life, with rates labeled current for 2024/25. This is a dated guide sample, not a current quote or a rate that necessarily applies to any particular applicant. The guide says nonsmokers may qualify for different rate classes and that premium credits are not guaranteed and may change year to year.

Request current quotes for the same coverage amount and applicant profile, then compare the total premiums over your intended coverage period—including what happens when a guarantee ends or an age band changes. Check how a new application, underwriting, and age could affect any later term.

4. Check benefits, exclusions, and continuation rights in the policy

The comparison guide lists several provisions, but its summary is not the group policy. Confirm the exact definitions, conditions, and limits in the current certificate and related policy documents.

  • Accelerated death benefit: The guide lists an advance of 50% of the benefit for terminal illness and defines terminal illness for these programs as a life expectancy of 12 months or less.
  • Waiver of premium: The guide lists a waiver if qualifying disability begins before age 60 and lasts at least nine months.
  • Free-look period: The guide lists 30 days.
  • Portability: The guide lists portability, subject to U.S. government regulations. Confirm when it is available and what conditions apply.
  • Exclusions and limitations: Review the policy for exclusions, benefit reductions, and other limits that could affect a claim or the amount payable.
  • Renewability and conversion: Confirm whether coverage can be renewed or converted, when those rights apply, and any deadlines or changed costs.

5. Verify current availability and application details

The 2018 IEEE Spectrum article described geographic restrictions, named New York Life as underwriter, and discussed a QuickDecision application process with specific age, coverage, exam, and notification details. Those statements describe the program at that time; they do not establish current availability, underwriting, application steps, or insurer and administrator arrangements. The article’s claim that approximately 35,000 IEEE members and their families used the plan is likewise a historical figure, not a current enrollment count.

Before applying, use current program materials and policy documents to confirm eligibility by age and location, available coverage, underwriting and any medical requirements, insurer and administrator, application timing, and all state or country restrictions. Do not rely on historical descriptions of a fast or simplified application as a promise about the current process.

6. Fit the coverage into your household’s full protection plan

IEEE group life may be considered alongside employer-provided and individually purchased coverage. Decide how much protection your household needs and for how long, then assess whether coverage you already have meets that need. The available sources do not establish that the IEEE option is always cheaper or better than alternatives; compare current terms and total cost rather than assuming group coverage is the best fit.

Keep term life distinct from the separate Group Whole Life final-expense option announced by IEEE Women in Engineering on October 2, 2026. That announcement describes whole-life coverage with cash value and a two-year graded benefit period, among other product-specific terms. Those features belong to that whole-life option and do not establish Group Term Life benefits, eligibility, or pricing.

What to request before deciding

  • A current quote for your age, location, coverage amount, and applicable rate class.
  • The current certificate or group policy, including exclusions, renewal, conversion, portability, and benefit-reduction provisions.
  • Confirmation of current eligibility, coverage limits, application requirements, and geographic availability.
  • A comparison of total premiums over the period you expect to need coverage, including the effect of rate changes or the end of a level-rate guarantee.

For background, see the IEEE/AMBA comparison guide, the 2018 IEEE Spectrum article, and the October 2026 IEEE Women in Engineering announcement.
