If you don’t know a package’s weight, UPS’s U.S. instructions suggest weighing yourself while holding it, weighing yourself alone, then subtracting the second reading from the first. A parcel scale gives you a direct measurement. UPS also offers flat-rate shipping supplies that may let you skip weighing when they’re suitable for the shipment. Weight is only part of the calculation: package dimensions can affect the charge too.
How to find your package’s weight without a parcel scale
UPS’s U.S. instructions give a household-scale workaround: weigh yourself holding the package, then weigh yourself alone. Subtract your weight alone from the combined reading to estimate the package’s weight. For the result to represent the shipment, weigh the package after it is packed and ready to send.
- Stand on a household scale while holding the packed package and note the reading.
- Set the package down, weigh yourself again, and note that reading.
- Subtract the second reading from the first. The difference is the package’s estimated weight.
This method avoids buying a dedicated scale, but it depends on stable readings and on being able to hold the package safely. For a large or heavy parcel, use a suitable platform or parcel scale instead of lifting it.
When a parcel scale is the better choice
UPS says to use a scale to determine a package’s actual weight. A digital postal scale is a practical option if you send packages regularly or need a direct reading without the subtraction method. UPS does not endorse a particular make or model in the guidance cited here.
#1 Best Overall
- Accurate to 0.1oz: High precision for postage, packaging, or food preparation.
- Solid design with high weight limit: 50Lbs
- Smart Tare & Hold Functions: Effortlessly subtract container weight or lock readings for larger boxes.
- Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.
- Multi-measuring units: Kg, lb/oz, oz
UPS also describes an electronic-scale workflow for its online shipping process. You may need to set scale preferences and install the required component; CampusShip users configure the scale in CampusShip. Follow the setup instructions for the specific UPS workflow you use.
Actual weight and dimensional weight are different
Actual weight is what the package weighs on a scale. In UPS’s U.S. guidance, actual package weight is rounded up to the next whole pound. That U.S. rule should not be assumed to apply to international shipments.
Rank #2
- Digital shipping postal scale for weighing items; heavy duty yet lightweight, portable design
- Includes a postal scale and an AC adapter; black ABS with an aluminum anti-skid platform
- 660 pound (300kg) capacity reads to 0.11 pound/50g/2 ounce in 0.1 ounce increments; minimum load weight is 6 ounces (150g)
- Measuring units in kg, ounces, and pounds
- Additional separated large back-lit LCD display allows for reading the weighing data from a distance of up to 2m
UPS may also use dimensional weight when a package is large relative to its actual weight. Its U.S. support page describes the calculation as length × width × height divided by a divisor, and lists divisors of 139 for Daily Rates and 166 for Retail Rates. The applicable rate type and shipment details matter, so confirm the calculation in the UPS shipment flow rather than treating these figures as universal.
Measure the packed parcel as well as weighing it. UPS identifies the longest side as the length and provides instructions for rounding dimensions; follow the method displayed for the applicable rate and service. A light but bulky package can be charged based on dimensional weight rather than actual weight.

Can you ship without weighing by using UPS flat-rate supplies?
UPS says its flat-rate shipping options may let you skip weighing. That does not mean every package qualifies: the supply and service must be appropriate for the shipment. Check eligibility and the rate shown for your specific package in UPS’s current shipping flow before relying on this option.
Why an accurate weight matters
Entering a guess does not guarantee that UPS will accept the stated weight without a correction. UPS’s U.S. charge-correction guidance flags packages over 50 pounds when weight is not specified in source documents or in the UPS automated shipping system. This is a criterion in that guidance, not a statement that every package over 50 pounds incurs the same fee. Provide accurate shipment details, especially for heavy parcels.

Which weight-measuring option should you use?
| Option | Effort and confidence | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Household-scale subtraction | No dedicated shipping scale needed; the estimate depends on stable readings and safely holding the package. | An occasional, manageable package when you have a household scale. |
| Parcel or postal scale | Provides a direct actual-weight reading. | Regular shipments or parcels that are awkward to hold; electronic-scale integration may be available in supported UPS workflows after setup. |
| UPS flat-rate supplies | May eliminate the need to weigh, but only when the option is eligible for the shipment. | A shipment that fits an applicable flat-rate supply and service; verify the rate and eligibility with UPS. |
Check service limits before sending
UPS’s U.S. support page lists a maximum package weight of 150 pounds and a maximum length of 108 inches, while cautioning that limits can vary by shipment. These are published U.S. guidance figures, not universal limits for every service or international shipment. Check the specific service details before tendering a package.
