The EFL waived a potential 15-point deduction on the club’s exit from administration, but imposed a two-season budget restriction and limits on player registrations. HMRC was among the parties affected by missed payments reported during the financial crisis; no current HMRC balance is established by the available sources.
What is the latest on the Sheffield Wednesday takeover?
The EFL announced on 2 May 2026 that the joint administrators had agreed to transfer the club’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC, and said Sheffield Wednesday had met the relevant League requirements and was no longer regarded as being in administration. BTG, the joint administrators, announced on 5 May that the sale had completed.
The consortium is led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The distinction between a preferred bidder, an agreement to transfer assets and a completed sale matters: the May announcements described an agreement first and completion three days later.
What did the EFL decide about points and operating restrictions?
The EFL Board used its discretion under the League’s Insolvency Policy not to impose the potential 15-point deduction on exit from administration. The waiver was a decision by the EFL, not an automatic entitlement for the club.

The club remained subject to a budget restriction for the next two seasons. It could register players only in accordance with a business plan agreed with the new owners. BTG separately described agreed wage and transfer parameters.
How do the points decisions fit together?
These were separate decisions made at different stages. The 15 points considered on exit from administration were waived; they should not be added to the earlier deductions.

| Date and source | Points decision | What it concerned |
|---|---|---|
| October 2025 — EFL | 12-point deduction | Automatic deduction triggered when the club entered administration. |
| December 2025 — EFL | 18 points in total during the 2025/26 season, as described by the League | The EFL said administration and separate disciplinary proceedings for 2024/25 breaches had resulted in deductions during that season. It also said no further points would be deducted following a payment-obligations case. |
| May 2026 — EFL | Potential 15-point deduction waived | A possible penalty on exit from administration; the EFL Board decided not to impose it. |
What is known about HMRC and unpaid bills?
BBC Sport’s report on the completed takeover described missed payments to players, staff, HMRC and other clubs among the financial problems surrounding the administration. That establishes HMRC as part of the reported creditor context, but it does not establish how much tax was owed at the time of the sale, whether any balance remains, or how much HMRC ultimately recovered.
Accordingly, a current HMRC debt figure should not be inferred from the missed-payment reporting. A reliable update on the balance would require a newer, direct source that states the amount and the relevant entity or period.

Does a Companies House filing mean the takeover did not complete?
No. Companies House filing history for SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED shows a notice extending the period of administration filed on 30 August 2026. That is a later filing for the named limited company. It does not, by itself, overturn the EFL’s 2 May announcement or BTG’s 5 May completion notice reporting the transfer and sale of club assets.
The available records do not explain the full legal effect of the later filing after the asset sale. The careful reading is to keep the records distinct: the asset transfer was reported completed, while a later administration-period notice was filed for the limited company. The filing alone is not evidence that the takeover never completed.

What do the takeover rules add?
The EFL’s acquisition-of-control guidance says club takeovers are subject to League requirements. Following the introduction of the Independent Football Regulator’s Owners, Directors and Senior Executives regime on 5 May 2026, relevant acquisitions also involve that regime. For this transaction, the EFL said in its 2 May statement that Sheffield Wednesday had met the relevant League requirements.
David Storch said on behalf of Arise Capital Partners in BTG’s completion notice that the consortium intended to deliver stability, ambition and direction. That is the new ownership’s stated intention, not evidence of future financial or sporting performance.
