Yes. On February 9, 2022, Snoop Dogg announced that he had acquired the Death Row Records brand from MNRK Music Group. The deal’s price and terms were not disclosed, and the announcement did not establish that he acquired every recording or publishing right associated with the label. Death Row was Snoop’s debut label; two days later, B.O.D.R. became the first album released through it under his ownership.
What did Snoop Dogg acquire?
The February 9, 2022 announcement described the transaction as an acquisition of the Death Row Records brand from MNRK Music Group, which it said was controlled by funds managed by Blackstone. It disclosed neither the purchase price nor detailed contract terms. The announcement therefore supports saying Snoop acquired the brand, but not that the deal transferred every asset associated with Death Row.

Contemporaneous Los Angeles Times reporting likewise said it was unclear whether ownership of the music catalog was part of the deal. A label brand, the rights to sound recordings, and the rights to musical compositions are different assets; a headline about buying a record label does not by itself settle who owns each one.
Was Death Row Records Snoop Dogg’s first label?
Yes. The 2022 announcement called Death Row Snoop’s debut label and described him as one of its founding members. That connection explains why he framed the acquisition as a return to the label where his career began. In the release, Snoop said, “It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members.”

The available announcements describe several separate developments, not one blanket transfer of all Death Row-related rights. The 2022 brand acquisition announcement did not disclose whether the recording catalog was included. Later statements addressed streaming distribution and publishing separately.

| February 9, 2022 | Death Row Records brand | Snoop announced he acquired the brand from MNRK Music Group; price and detailed terms were not disclosed. |
| March 10, 2023 | Streaming catalog distribution | gamma’s announcement said the Death Row catalog, including music and videos, had returned to streaming services worldwide under a long-term licensing arrangement granting gamma exclusive worldwide marketing and distribution rights. |
| 2024 | Publishing catalogs | Snoop’s official site announced Reservoir Media deals covering Snoop’s domestic publishing catalog and future works, as well as Death Row’s publishing catalog. Financial details were not disclosed. |
The 2023 gamma announcement named recordings including Doggystyle, Tha Doggfather, 2Pac’s All Eyez on Me, Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food, and the Above the Rim and Murder Was the Case soundtracks. It was a dated announcement about a licensing and distribution arrangement, not proof that every title remains available on every service today.
Catalog rights can also differ from album to album. For example, the Associated Press reported in February 2023 that Dr. Dre’s The Chronic returned to streaming through its original distributor, Interscope Records. That example is another reason not to treat Snoop’s brand acquisition as evidence of control over every recording connected to Death Row.
