Yes—reported Nintendo Switch 2 hardware sales were lower in the latest year-over-year quarter, and Nintendo’s forecast for FY2027 is below its first-year total. But the figures show a slowdown relative to the launch-year cycle, not proof that consumer demand is in a lasting decline.
What the latest Switch 2 sales figures show
Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold in FY2026, its first fiscal year with the console. Quarterly sell-in rose and fell substantially over that period, with the holiday quarter the high point.

Nintendo’s quarterly figures are from its FY2026 sales status presentation. The Associated Press reported the 3.82 million figure for April–June 2026; the comparison figure of 5.82 million for the same months a year earlier comes from Nintendo’s presentation.
Did Switch 2 sales fall after the launch year?
In the latest same-quarter comparison available here, reported sales were about 34% lower: 3.82 million in April–June 2026 versus Nintendo’s 5.82 million sell-in figure for April–June 2025. Comparing the same three months helps limit seasonal distortion, though the two figures come from different sources and should not be treated as a direct tally of consumer purchases.

Nintendo’s FY2027 forecast is 16.50 million hardware units, about 17% below the 19.86 million units reported for FY2026. That is a forecast for the fiscal year ending in March 2027, not a completed-year result. It compares a later-year projection with the console’s first fiscal year, so it does not establish the eventual year-over-year result.
Why the annual cycle matters
The first fiscal year’s quarterly pattern was not a steady decline: units rose from 4.54 million in Q2 to 7.01 million in Q3, then fell to 2.49 million in Q4. The holiday quarter was the peak. That makes a single quarter-to-quarter comparison especially easy to misread; a same-quarter year-over-year comparison is more informative about direction, while still covering only one quarter.

Nintendo described Switch 2 sales as strong throughout its first fiscal year, noting the launch, holiday momentum and a boost from the March release of Pokémon Pokopia. That is the company’s characterization in its May 8, 2026 presentation, not an independent measure of demand. The reported numbers provide scale and timing, but do not by themselves identify why sales changed.
What “sales” means in these figures
Nintendo labels its quarterly hardware data “sell-in.” It defines sell-in as sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities, including business partners and direct sales through Nintendo’s online stores. Sell-through, by contrast, means sales to individual consumers, including retailer purchases and Nintendo direct sales. A sell-in figure is therefore not simply a count of consoles bought by customers at retail.

The latest comparison combines Nintendo’s official prior-year quarter figure with the Associated Press’s report of the April–June 2026 figure. AP’s August 6, 2026 report also gives Nintendo’s FY2027 forecast. The figures reviewed here do not include an FY2027 holiday-quarter result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hardware units are not revenue or profit
Console unit sales answer a different question from revenue or profitability. Nintendo’s FY2026 financial material says the Switch 2’s higher unit price contributed to platform-business sales growth, so hardware units alone cannot establish the direction of revenue or profit.
The broader software figures add context, but measure something else: Nintendo reported 48.71 million Switch 2 software units in FY2026 and 14.70 million Mario Kart World units in its year-end results material. Nintendo’s separate top-selling title sales page lists Mario Kart World at 15.39 million units as of June 30, 2026. Software unit totals include bundled and downloadable copies; they are not counts of physical game boxes sold.
Quick Recap
How to read the slowdown signal
- What the evidence supports: reported hardware sales were lower in the latest same-quarter year-over-year comparison, and Nintendo’s FY2027 forecast is below FY2026 actual sales.
- What it does not establish: the cause of the change, a multi-quarter consumer-demand trend, or whether the full FY2027 result will match the forecast.
- What to watch: subsequent reported quarters, especially comparisons with the same fiscal periods, and whether actual FY2027 sales track Nintendo’s forecast.
