Yes—Saber Interactive’s selected assets left Embracer Group in a completed 2024 transaction. Embracer announced the sale to Beacon Interactive on March 14 and said it closed on March 28. The official announced purchase price was $247 million, including $44 million in assumed earn-out liabilities, before possible additional consideration. The deal did not transfer every studio associated with Embracer’s former Saber group, and it did not give Saber the Metro franchise rights.
What happened to Saber Interactive?
Embracer Group agreed to sell selected Saber assets to Beacon Interactive, which Embracer described as controlled by Saber co-founder Matthew Karch. Embracer announced the agreement on March 14, 2024, and confirmed completion on March 28, 2024. Embracer’s announcement of the agreement and its closing announcement establish this as a completed divestment, not a pending proposal.
The headline phrase “death hug” is a vivid characterization, not a term used by the companies. The concrete change was a transfer of specified studios, related intellectual property and liabilities, and contractor relationships to Beacon.
How much did Beacon pay?
Embracer’s March 2024 announcement put the purchase price at $247 million, including $44 million in assumed earn-out liabilities, before additional consideration. Embracer also said Beacon could owe up to $94 million more if it later resold the assets under specified conditions. These are the seller’s disclosed terms; the $247 million figure is not the same as the earlier reported possible transaction value.

In September 2024, Embracer reported a settlement under which it received $168.4 million and was due another $28.1 million later in 2024 and 2025. The settlement cancelled Beacon’s option to buy 4A Games and Zen Studios and, according to Embracer, concluded the financial aspects of the divestment. Embracer’s September 2024 settlement announcement describes those figures.
Why the early “up to $500 million” figure differs
On February 29, 2024, Bloomberg reported that a potential transaction could be worth up to $500 million, including an option to bring additional Embracer subsidiaries into the deal. That was an early report attributed to a person familiar with the transaction. Embracer’s subsequent disclosure described a $247 million purchase price for selected assets, plus contingent additional consideration. Because the reports refer to different stages and potentially different scope, the figures should not be treated as competing prices for an identical package. Bloomberg’s February 2024 report provides the earlier estimate.

Which studios and assets changed hands?
Embracer’s March announcement listed all Saber-branded studios among the transferred assets, together with these additional studios and businesses:
- DIGIC
- Nimble Giant
- Fractured Byte
- Sandbox Strategies
- Mad Head Games
- New World Interactive
- 3D Realms
- Slipgate
The transferred package also included the listed entities’ owned or licensed intellectual property and related liabilities, as well as contractor relationships. It was a sale of selected assets, not a blanket transfer of every company that had been part of Embracer’s broader gaming portfolio.

What did Embracer keep?
Embracer initially retained multiple studios, including 4A Games, Zen Studios, Aspyr, Tripwire, Tuxedo Labs, Beamdog, Demiurge, 34BigThings, Shiver and Snapshot. Beacon had an option to acquire 4A Games and Zen Studios, but Embracer said in September 2024 that the option was cancelled. Those two studios therefore remained within Embracer. The settlement announcement confirms the cancellation.
Does Saber Interactive own the Metro games?
No conclusion that Saber acquired the Metro franchise rights follows from the studio transaction. Embracer said long-term licensing and publishing rights for current and future PC and console Metro games remained with its operative group PLAION, regardless of whether Beacon exercised its option to acquire 4A Games. Buying a studio and holding franchise publishing rights are separate matters. Embracer’s March 2024 announcement describes the rights retained by PLAION.

Embracer said the divestment would end its operations in Russia and immediately improve cash flow while reducing capital expenditure, net debt and future liabilities. It presented the sale as part of its restructuring, while saying it would retain key companies, valuable intellectual property and future publishing rights. Those are the seller’s stated rationale and expected effects, not independently established outcomes.
Embracer also expected the transaction to create a non-cash net expense of approximately SEK 6.0 billion, principally related to the book value of goodwill. That accounting impact is distinct from the cash purchase price.

Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors said the transaction put both companies “in a stronger position to thrive going forward.” Matthew Karch, identified in the release as Saber co-founder and Beacon director, said the divestment left both parties “in much better positions to grow.” These are each executive’s views on the deal, not proof of future results.
