To check an SRD application, use SASSA’s official portal at srd.sassa.gov.za. For other social grant applications, contact a local SASSA office, call 0800 60 10 11, or email [email protected] if you do not receive an outcome when you apply. The route depends on which grant you applied for.
Choose the right way to check your SASSA status
| Application | Where to check or follow up |
|---|---|
| Social Relief of Distress (SRD) | Use the official SRD portal: https://srd.sassa.gov.za. SASSA’s 2026 grant booklet directs SRD applicants to check there. SASSA Grant Booklet 2026. |
| Other social grants | If you do not get an outcome on the day you apply, follow up at a local SASSA office, call 0800 60 10 11, or email [email protected], as listed in SASSA’s 2026 grant booklet. SASSA Grant Booklet 2026. |
SASSA also lists its website, the grant application portal at services.sassa.gov.za, WhatsApp chatbot 082 054 0016, and local or service offices among its service channels. These are general channels; use the SRD portal specifically for SRD status. SASSA Grant Booklet 2026.
What to have ready for an SRD application
Use a cellphone number registered in your own name, and make sure the information you submitted is accurate. In a statement published on 6 November 2025, SASSA said an applicant’s phone number and banking details are important to processing, that the number helps with progress monitoring and notifications, and that some notifications require verification. SASSA also said banking details belonging to someone else will not be verified for payment. SASSA statement, 6 November 2025.
Do not assume that entering an ID number or phone number will always produce an immediate result: SASSA’s published guidance identifies the official portal but does not specify every current screen, information prompt, or response time.

How to understand a status message
SASSA’s 2026 grant booklet confirms the SRD portal but does not publish a complete, current glossary of status messages. If your live portal shows a label you do not understand, use the exact wording when contacting SASSA through an official channel rather than relying on an old list as definitive guidance. An older SASSA PDF for the R350 grant gives examples such as “Application complete,” “Bank details pending,” and “Reapplication pending.” The PDF describes those labels in the context of that earlier process; it is legacy guidance, not confirmation of the meaning of every label in the present SRD portal. What to do if there is no outcome or your application is unsuccessful
If you are still waiting
For social grants other than SRD, SASSA says that if an outcome is unavailable on the application day, it is the applicant’s responsibility to follow up through a local office, the call centre, or email. Use the contact routes in the 2026 grant booklet rather than treating an estimate for one type of grant as a standard timeline for all applications. SASSA Grant Booklet 2026.
The South African Government says grant-in-aid processing may take up to three months. That estimate applies to grant-in-aid only; it is not a promised processing time for SRD or other grants. Grant in aid service page.

If your application is unsuccessful
SASSA’s 2026 booklet says unsuccessful social grant applicants should receive written notification with reasons and describes an appeals route. It lists [email protected] for normal grants and the SRD appeals site at srd.dsd.gov.za. Confirm the applicable procedure and deadline for your grant and decision before filing; do not assume one deadline applies to every case. SASSA Grant Booklet 2026.

Check status only through official SASSA channels. SASSA’s 2026 booklet warns people to verify that a source is official before engaging or sharing personal details. It says SASSA will not request an ID number, bank details, or PIN through social media or unofficial websites, and that it will never ask for a bank PIN. If a communication seems suspicious or you are unsure whether it is genuine, call 0800 60 10 11 using the number listed in SASSA material. SASSA Grant Booklet 2026.
