Don’t buy from the ad: confirm the event directly with the named venue. If you already paid, contact your bank or financial institution promptly and ask how to dispute the transaction.
Is the sky lantern festival at Kings Park or Langley Park real?
No—not the events described in the warning. In a September 15, 2025 media release, the Government of Western Australia’s Consumer Protection said sponsored social media ads promoted purported festivals at Kings Park and Langley Park, but neither venue had scheduled or approved an event. WA ScamNet had received increasing victim reports in the weeks before the warning; the release did not state a total victim count or losses.
The ads described releasing “biodegradable and recycled” paper lanterns and offered tickets for around $50 each on sites promoting events in several Australian cities. Buyers were asked to pay by credit card and provide personal information, which scammers could capture and misuse.
How to verify an advertised event before paying
Start with the venue, not the advertisement. Find the venue’s official website or contact details independently, then ask whether it has approved the specific event, date and operator. WA ScamNet’s event-scam guidance also advises checking with the stated venue or local council and locating the legitimate business website independently.

Consumer Protection’s warning described these indicators on the fraudulent sites. None proves a scam by itself, but several together warrant caution—and they do not replace direct confirmation from the venue.

- Some dates were marked “sold-out” while later dates remained available, a tactic that can pressure people to buy quickly.
- The sites said tickets and the precise location would be provided only 48 hours before the event.
- One spelling error used “Sidney” instead of Sydney.
- A Florida address appeared alongside a UK phone number.
- The domains were recently registered and their ownership details hidden. Consumer Protection recommends checking registration information with ICANN’s registration data lookup; a new domain or concealed registrant information is a reason to investigate further, not conclusive proof on its own.
At the time of the September 2025 release, ScamNet had helped remove three fake websites: AU Skylight Event, Lantern Fest Australia and Sky Dreams Australia. The release said replacement names and new sites were appearing, so an old list of removed or known sites cannot establish that a current offer is genuine. Verify the event and operator independently.
What to do if you bought tickets or entered personal details
- Contact your bank or financial institution immediately. Tell it you may have paid for a fraudulent event and ask whether the transaction can be disputed. Consumer Protection warned that waiting could mean the bank’s recovery or chargeback window has passed before the advertised event date.
- Get help if you shared identity information. Consumer Protection directs people concerned about captured personal information to ID Care at idcare.org or 1800 595 160.
- Report the matter or ask for guidance. Contact WA ScamNet through its website or by calling 1300 30 40 54.
- Be alert to replacement sites. The removal of one reported website does not prevent the operators from rebranding or launching another version.
What the warning says about lanterns, LEDs and drone shows
Consumer Protection said releasing open-flame lanterns is illegal in Australia because of fire and burns hazards. The release also noted that later advertisements shifted to claims about “micro-LED bulbs made from recycled plastic that self-destruct” and synchronized drone shows. That warning does not establish that every LED or drone event is fake. Apply the same checks: confirm approval with the venue, identify the operator independently and verify the event’s location and logistics before paying.
