When did SAS leave Star Alliance?
SAS remained a Star Alliance member through August 31, 2024. On September 1, 2024, it officially became a SkyTeam member. The Q2 2024 timing in earlier coverage was an initial expectation: SAS’s April 8 announcement said it would stay in Star Alliance through August 31, and the April 29 adherence agreement named September 1 as its SkyTeam entry date. SAS confirmed the completed switch on September 1.

What happened to EuroBonus points and status?
EuroBonus stayed SAS’s loyalty program after the airline changed alliances. SAS said members could earn and redeem points across most SkyTeam airlines—not necessarily every member airline or every fare.

At the transition, SAS said EuroBonus Silver mapped to SkyTeam Elite, while Gold and Diamond mapped to SkyTeam Elite Plus. Alliance tier recognition does not by itself guarantee every service on every itinerary: ticket, route, operating airline, cabin and status conditions can matter.
Can EuroBonus members earn or use points on SkyTeam airlines?
Yes, on eligible partner flights, but the available point functions vary by airline. SAS’s current EuroBonus airline-partner list identifies earning and use separately for each partner. As of October 8, 2026, SAS listed 21 airline partners; that count describes the live list on that date, not a guarantee that each partner offers both earning and redemption.

Before booking or crediting a flight, check:
- The marketing and operating airlines, and whether the flight number qualifies.
- The partner’s current rules for earning points, redeeming points, or both.
- Your booking class or fare bucket, which may affect eligibility or accrual.
- Your EuroBonus level and the specific benefits recognized on that itinerary.
Does SkyTeam membership guarantee lounge access or priority service?
No. SAS and SkyTeam described access to more than 750 airport lounges in the April 2024 transition announcement, and SAS’s current SkyTeam page continues to cite 750-plus lounges. That network figure is not an individual access entitlement. SAS’s current lounge information makes access conditional on factors including status, ticket, route and travel class. Check the rules for the specific airport and departure before relying on lounge access or priority services.
What does the switch mean for destinations and connections?
SAS and SkyTeam announced a network of more than 1,060 destinations in 2024. SAS’s current SkyTeam page describes more than 1,000 destinations. These are alliance network-reach figures; they do not mean SAS flies directly to every destination, nor do they establish that a particular connection, fare or award seat is available.

For a real trip, compare the origin, destination and connection options, then verify the rules for each flight. Alliance membership alone does not guarantee an award seat, point accrual, lounge visit or priority service.

There is no single rule established for every ticket or loyalty program. In its April 2024 departure statement, Star Alliance said the transition was intended to be seamless, particularly for previously booked flights, and directed mileage questions to individual airline programs. For a specific booking, ask the relevant loyalty program or airline to confirm how the ticket, flight date and credited miles are treated. Star Alliance also said 17 member airlines would continue serving Scandinavia after SAS’s departure; that was its statement at the time, not a current schedule count.
