In October 2020, Samsung Display and LG Display launched a joint consultative body bringing together 30 display businesses to strengthen South Korean suppliers. It was a supplier-development initiative—not a consumer product partnership—focused on helping local small and midsize enterprises improve technology and grow alongside larger companies.
What the Samsung–LG initiative was
The two display makers launched the consultative body earlier in October 2020. Its purpose was to advance local suppliers’ technology and promote mutual growth, with larger companies supporting domestic small and midsize enterprises (SMEs). The launch included six components companies, among them SFA Engineering and Duksan Neolux.
The effort was part of a broader public-private push: the contemporaneous report dated partnerships for mutual growth between SMEs and conglomerates in the semiconductor and display sectors to February 2018. That background does not make every supplier-support activity in those industries part of the 2020 body.
Which technologies suppliers were expected to develop
The report pointed to ion implantation equipment and stepper exposure systems as examples of equipment local SMEs could develop. It said conglomerates had mostly imported these types of equipment from overseas. The stated aim was to build domestic technical capability in materials, components and equipment; the report did not establish that the named equipment had subsequently been developed or commercialized by the participating suppliers.

Why supplier development mattered in 2020
The stated rationale was to strengthen supply-chain resilience and technological competitiveness amid trade protectionism and intensifying competition in display markets. South Korea’s trade minister, Sung Yun-mo, said: “Only close cooperation among conglomerates and SME suppliers will provide domestic display industries with the solid groundwork to maintain their global competitiveness, when the sector is faced with competing countries’ companies catching up, as well as Japan’s export restrictions.”
The same 2020 report described a government policy plan to provide 5 trillion won by 2022 for more than 338 key component companies, with 1.5 trillion won assigned for tax benefits and subsidies. These were announced policy figures as reported at the time, not verified spending totals or evidence of what the consultative body itself delivered.

How later Samsung and LG supplier programs compare
Later company announcements show that supplier support continued in other forms, but they do not confirm the status or results of the 2020 Samsung Display–LG Display consultative body.
| Announcement | Focus and support | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| LG, February 2024 | Expanded customized smart-factory support for suppliers, including automation, information and intelligent processes. | Describes an expansion of support; the cited announcement does not tie it to the 2020 consultative body. |
| Samsung, June 2026 | An agreement among 11 affiliates and supplier companies. | Samsung said about 6,700 supplier companies were expected to benefit; this is an expected reach, not a measured outcome. |
| LG, July 2026 | A multi-tier supplier agreement covering payment practices, finance, welfare and technical support. | LG reported more than 250 supplier smart-factory support recipients since 2019. This is a separate reported program figure, not an outcome measure for the 2020 body. |
These initiatives differ in participating business units, supplier tiers, geography and types of support. Their announcements do not provide comparable outcome measurements, so the figures should not be read as a like-for-like measure of success.

What is—and is not—known about the 2020 body today
The available reporting does not establish whether the 2020 consultative body remains active, who its current members are, or what measurable results it achieved. Later Samsung and LG announcements are useful examples of ongoing supplier-support activity, but are not status updates on that specific body.
The 2020 report also discussed other corporate supplier-support actions, including Samsung Electronics taking equity stakes in S&S Tech and YIK Corporation, and LG Chem supporting battery suppliers Dongshin Motech and Shinsung FA through loans and other assistance. Those examples involved different businesses and should not be attributed to the Samsung Display–LG Display consultative body.
