Some reports put Robert Downey Jr.’s pay for Spider-Man: Homecoming at more than $1 million per minute of screen time. That is a media calculation—not a verified hourly rate or confirmed contract term—and published estimates disagree about how long he appears in the film.
Where the $1 million-per-minute figure comes from
The calculation divides a reported fee by an estimate of Downey’s screen time. Hindustan Times reported in 2020 that he received $15 million for three days’ work and estimated 15 minutes on screen. Dividing $15 million by 15 gives $1 million per minute. Hindustan Times’ report presents those figures as reported, not as confirmed contract details.
The Independent published a different calculation in 2017: it reported a $15 million fee and just under eight minutes of screen time, yielding approximately $1.8 million per minute. The Independent’s report likewise does not establish the underlying contract as an official disclosure.
Why the published calculations differ
The outlets use different estimates for the denominator: just under eight minutes in The Independent’s account and 15 minutes in Hindustan Times’ account. With the same reported $15 million fee, the shorter estimate produces the larger per-minute figure.

Was Downey’s fee confirmed?
The cited coverage does not provide Downey’s contract, a payroll disclosure, or studio confirmation of the amount. The Guardian explicitly calls the $15 million figure rumored. The available reports therefore support describing it as a reported or rumored fee, not as an established fact. They also do not settle which screen-time estimate is correct.
What the calculation does—and does not—measure
“Per minute” here means a reported fee divided by an outlet’s estimate of Downey’s visible time in the finished film. It is not his hourly wage, a measure of all work performed, or proof that the studio paid him a fixed amount for each minute shown. The separate “three days’ work” description is itself reported, rather than a publicly verified accounting of the full work involved.

Downey’s role in the film
In the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming, Downey returned as Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, and served as a mentor to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Sony Pictures’ film page describes the movie and its characters. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president, explained the film’s place in the larger Marvel world in a 2017 interview: “One of the reasons it’s called Homecoming is because it feels right that Spider-Man can finally inhabit the world, the full Marvel world, from which he came.” GamesRadar+ interview.
