Nor do they independently substantiate the “first Black woman” superlative. The financial distinction matters: a company’s estimated valuation is not its sales, funding raised, or Rihanna’s personal net worth.
Which two brands are meant?
Fenty Beauty is the cosmetics business Rihanna launched in 2017. Its FAQ describes the Fenty Beauty brands as joint ventures between Rihanna and Kendo Brands, and identifies Rihanna as founder, CEO, and an owner. The same FAQ also lists Fenty Skin, Fenty Hair, and Fenty Fragrance within her Fenty businesses; those should not be confused with the two companies named in this claim. Fenty Beauty’s FAQ

What the financial figures actually measure
Financial headlines often place valuation, revenue, fundraising, and personal wealth side by side. They are different measures and cannot be used interchangeably.

A valuation is an estimate of what a company is worth, often inferred from a transaction or investment. Revenue is money generated by sales over a period; fundraising is money invested in the company; personal net worth estimates an individual’s assets minus liabilities. Guinness says the bulk of Rihanna’s reported 2023 fortune came from Fenty Beauty, but that does not mean Fenty Beauty itself was valued at $1.4 billion.
What is known about ownership—and what is not
Fenty Beauty’s FAQ characterizes its brands as joint ventures between Rihanna and Kendo Brands, with Rihanna identified as an owner. Forbes describes Fenty Beauty as co-owned with LVMH. TIME’s 2019 report also quotes LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault praising Rihanna’s entrepreneurial and leadership qualities. These sources describe the partnership, but do not provide a current ownership breakdown or current valuation.

For Savage X Fenty, ownership estimates differ: a Forbes profile excerpt put Rihanna’s stake at an estimated 28%, while Guinness World Records gives 30% on a page describing 2023 information. These are source-specific reported estimates, not a settled current percentage. Forbes also reports the January 2022 funding round, but fundraising alone does not establish a current company valuation.

The wording is a sweeping historical superlative, but the available sources do not define who counts as having “built” a brand, what qualifies as a billion-dollar brand, or which people and companies are included in the comparison. The evidence supports saying Rihanna built two major consumer businesses with historical billion-dollar estimates; it does not establish that she was the first Black woman to do so. The claim should therefore be presented as reported wording, not as a verified record.

What readers can reasonably conclude
- The two businesses meant are Fenty Beauty, a cosmetics brand launched in 2017, and Savage X Fenty, a lingerie and apparel brand established in 2018.
- There is dated evidence of Fenty Beauty’s 2018 sales and 2022 revenue growth, and of Savage X Fenty’s January 2022 fundraising. None of these figures is a current comparable valuation for both companies.
- Rihanna’s personal fortune estimate is separate from either company’s value, and published estimates of her Savage X Fenty stake differ.
- Private-company valuations and ownership can change. Guinness notes its record pages are not updated immediately, and the cited material does not establish current 2026 valuations for either brand.
