Reselling Domain Names: How to Sell a Domain Name Safely

A domain resale transfers control of a registration, not a physical asset. Compare sale routes and fees, price with evidence, and follow registrar rules to transfer safely.

You can resell a domain name by listing it with a marketplace, negotiating directly with a buyer, or using a broker, then transferring control of the registration through the registrar’s approved process. A domain is not a physical asset: it is a registration administered by a registrar, and your registrar agreement sets the renewal, transfer, and fee terms. A sale is never guaranteed, and there is no established universal formula for valuing a domain.

What you are selling

A domain name is a registered name held by a registrant through a registrar; the registrar provides registration services and works with the registry operator. In a resale, the buyer needs control of that registration, transferred under the applicable registrar and registry procedures. First confirm that you are the registered name holder and identify which registrar administers it. ICANN explains the roles of registrants and registrars in its registrant guidance.

Before listing, check the registrar account, renewal date and price, and whether a transfer or account lock is active. Keep the contact email current so you receive policy and renewal notices. Fees and procedures vary by registrar.

Which domains are worth trying to sell?

Start with names that could plausibly serve multiple independent buyers, rather than a name whose appeal depends on targeting one known company. Sedo prohibits buying or selling domains comprised of trademark-protected terms under its marketplace policies. That is a marketplace rule and a warning sign, not a complete legal test for every jurisdiction. A trademark search alone does not guarantee that a name is lawful to use or resell.

There is no authoritative general valuation formula or established market-wide sell-through rate in the available evidence. Use completed sales of genuinely comparable domains, when you can find them, as one input. An asking price or automated estimate is not proof that a buyer paid that amount. Do not assume a typical holding period, profit, or return.

Choose a way to sell

Routes differ in how they present the name, handle negotiation, charge fees, and support the transaction. A listing or distribution network can expose a name to potential buyers; a broker can assist with negotiation. Neither guarantees a buyer. Compare the precise terms of the route you plan to use.

Route How it works What to check
Marketplace listing List a domain on a platform, potentially with partner distribution or a sales lander. Commission, eligibility, distribution conditions, payment timing, and transfer support.
Fixed-price listing Set a Buy It Now price for a buyer willing to purchase at that amount. Whether the price can be changed, how the sale is completed, and the applicable fee.
Offers or auction Invite offers or let buyers bid, then negotiate or accept under the platform’s terms. Whether offers are binding, auction rules, minimums, and transaction charges.
Broker Use a broker to handle or assist with buyer outreach and negotiation. Broker compensation, scope of service, payment handling, and who manages the transfer.

Afternic

Afternic describes sales landers, Buy It Now listings, Lease to Own, and distribution through reseller partners. Its seller page advertises 100+ distribution partners and 125 million qualified searches monthly; these are Afternic’s marketing figures, not independently verified buyer counts. The page also says Buy It Now can increase the chance of sale by up to 65%, a vendor claim rather than an independently established result. See Afternic’s seller page for its current services and terms.

Sedo

Sedo offers marketplace sale routes and publishes a price list for transaction fees. Its cited US price list states a 15% commission for direct marketplace sales through Make Offer listings or auctions. That figure applies to those routes and is not a universal fee for every Sedo transaction. Check the current price list and terms for your country and listing type at Sedo’s US price list.

Compare fees and the amount you keep

Marketplace fees change, and headline percentages are not automatically comparable: routes may have different conditions, payment handling, or minimum charges. At the time of the cited seller-page information, Afternic states standard commissions of 30% with Boost or 25% with Basic, with lower stated rates in some configurations involving its nameservers, and a $15 minimum commission. Sedo’s cited US price list states 15% for direct marketplace sales from Make Offer listings or auctions. Confirm current terms before listing; these are vendor-published figures and can change.

To estimate net proceeds, subtract the applicable commission and any other charges specified for your particular route from the sale price. Check whether a listing, parking, transfer, or payment-related charge applies, and read the transaction terms rather than assuming the platform provides a particular kind of escrow or buyer verification.

Set an asking price without guessing

  1. Look for completed comparable sales. Compare names with similar wording, extension, and likely buyer use where reliable sale evidence is available.
  2. Separate evidence from estimates. A seller’s asking price and an automated valuation are not completed-sale data.
  3. Choose a sale format. A fixed price makes the ask explicit; offers and auctions allow negotiation but do not ensure a sale.
  4. Account for net proceeds. Apply the commission and any route-specific costs before deciding what price makes sense to you.

No general formula or dependable market-wide sell-through rate is established here, so treat any suggested price as an asking strategy, not a promise of value.

Complete the sale and transfer carefully

ICANN’s Transfer Policy generally allows a registered name holder to transfer a domain between registrars when the gaining registrar’s process meets policy standards and the transfer is not barred by ICANN or registry policy. Transfers can nevertheless be delayed by authorization requirements or locks. ICANN’s Transfer Policy and transfer guidance describe the applicable rules. An Auth-Code helps identify the holder and prevent unauthorized transfers; keep it and account credentials private, and provide credentials only through the registrar or marketplace’s approved workflow.

  1. Confirm the transaction route. Follow the marketplace or registrar’s payment and transfer instructions, and confirm who is responsible for each step.
  2. Check for a lock before changing account details. A 60-day transfer lock may apply after a new registration or specified registrant contact changes. Some registrars may allow an opt-out for certain contact-change locks. Check the registrar’s rules before changing ownership details during a sale.
  3. Use the authorized transfer process. Confirm the registered holder, follow the registrar’s verification steps, and use the Auth-Code only where the workflow requests it.
  4. Verify completion and registration time. A completed holder-authorized registrar transfer adds one year to the registration term, subject to the ten-year maximum unexpired term.

ICANN’s transfer rules concern gTLD registrations; other extensions may have different registry procedures. Registrar terms also govern fees and exact handling.

Keep the registration from expiring during a sale

Continue monitoring renewal notices and the expiration date while the domain is listed or a transfer is pending. Under ICANN’s Expired Registration Recovery Policy, registrars must send reminder notices; for generic TLDs, a 30-day Redemption Grace Period applies after deletion. During that period, the registrant may restore the registration, and transfer is prohibited. Restoration fees and handling depend on the registrar. See ICANN’s Expired Registration Recovery Policy guidance.

What to check before you list

  • You are the registered name holder and can access the registrar account.
  • You know the registrar, renewal deadline, renewal price, and any active lock.
  • The account’s contact email is current.
  • The name is not being marketed around another party’s trademark, and you have considered applicable legal rules.
  • You have reviewed the marketplace’s current commission, listing conditions, payment process, and transfer support.
  • Your asking price reflects evidence you can explain, not a promised return or unverified estimate.
