COO Jen Wong described those aims as part of Reddit’s international growth strategy; the launch reports do not establish what results followed or whether the office still operates in the same form.
What Reddit announced about its Toronto office
On March 29, 2021, Reddit announced a new Canadian office in Toronto. The planned team covered management, sales, community, and engineering, according to Social Media Today’s March 29 report, which reproduced the company announcement. By April 2, MobileSyrup reported that the office had opened earlier that week, describing it as Reddit’s first Canadian office and locating it in downtown Toronto.
BetaKit also reported the launch on March 29, 2021. Together, the contemporaneous reports establish the announcement and launch timing, but they do not document the office’s present-day status, staffing, or remit.
Why Reddit said it wanted a local presence
Developing Canadian communities with local context
Wong told MobileSyrup that a local team could help Reddit grow communities with an understanding of Canadian context. She described the mission this way: “Our mission is to bring community and belonging to the world and I’m excited to be able to do that by having a local presence in Canada,” she stated. This was a statement of intent at launch, not evidence that particular communities or content outcomes resulted.
#1 Best Overall
Social Media Today reported Reddit’s 2021 announcement as saying Canada was its third-largest user base, after the United States and the United Kingdom, and that it was growing 40% year over year. Those are historical figures attributed to Reddit’s announcement, not current audience rankings or growth rates.
Serving Canadian brands and marketers
The office also had a commercial purpose. Reddit said its local team was partnering with local entities, establishing community-engagement programs, and servicing Canadian brands and marketers. Sales staffing and those stated activities point to a focus on advertiser relationships, including advertising on Reddit. The launch coverage, however, does not report financial results or establish an affiliate or referral program.

What the launch reports do—and do not—show
Reddit’s stated community-development and advertiser-service goals were complementary parts of one expansion strategy: build a local presence to support Canadian communities while working more directly with Canadian businesses. The reports explain the rationale Reddit gave for opening the office, but they do not measure whether the strategy enhanced Canadian content, expanded partnerships in practice, or produced business results.
