That was an estimate of his property business—not a verified figure for his personal net worth today. The available sources do not establish a current value for his privately held assets, liabilities, or cash.
What is Robert Bigelow’s net worth?
No independently verified current personal net-worth figure is established by the available reporting. Forbes estimated in 2011 that Bigelow’s real estate empire was worth $700 million. The distinction matters: a business or property portfolio valuation is not the same as a personal balance sheet, which would also account for debts, other assets, ownership interests, and liquidity.

In a Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine profile, Bigelow put his fortune at “somewhere south of a billion dollars.” That was his own estimate at the time of the profile, not an independent valuation or a current figure. Forbes’s 2011 profile and Smithsonian’s profile therefore offer historical context, not a precise answer for what he is worth in 2026.
How did Robert Bigelow make his money?
Real estate and Budget Suites
Bigelow’s reported wealth was closely tied to real estate. Forbes reported that he studied real estate and banking at Arizona State University, started with rental apartment complexes, and founded Budget Suites of America in 1988. The extended-stay chain offered weekly rentals. At the time of Forbes’s 2011 reporting, his real estate empire included Budget Suites and more than 14,000 apartment and office units across the Southwest. Forbes said he owned his companies and properties outright, and estimated the empire’s value at $700 million.

Smithsonian also identified Budget Suites and other properties as sources of rental income. These accounts describe the business and portfolio at the time they were published; they do not establish their present size or value.
Bigelow Aerospace
Bigelow also directed substantial personal resources to aerospace. Bigelow Aerospace’s company biography says he personally provided more than $350 million in financial support. In a CBS News interview, Bigelow said his spending on the space business was “approaching 290 million” dollars of his own money and called its financial performance “atrocious.” The company’s statement and his interview remark come from different reporting contexts and dates, so they should not be combined into one current investment total.
Rank #2
A 2013 Federal Aviation Administration compendium listed approximately $215 million invested by Bigelow and said he could invest up to $500 million by 2015. The potential amount was not proof that he ultimately invested that much. None of these reported spending figures establishes the present value of Bigelow Aerospace or the value of Bigelow’s stake in it.

Why these numbers do not add up to a current net worth
The figures describe different things: an estimated real estate empire value, a personal estimate of fortune, and reported aerospace spending. Spending money on a company does not show what that investment is worth now; a portfolio valuation also does not disclose personal liabilities or liquid assets. Adding the figures would mix unlike measures and could count related value more than once.

Forbes also quoted Bigelow describing the planned space-station business model: “We don’t sell anything, we lease it.” That comment provides context for the intended business model, but it does not establish the company’s subsequent financial results or current value.
