If family responsibilities mean you need to leave your job, keep your resignation letter brief and professional: state that you are resigning, give your final working day, and describe the reason simply as “family responsibilities” or “personal reasons.” Before sending it, check your notice obligations and consider whether qualifying leave could meet your needs without ending your employment.

What to include—and what to keep private
Make the resignation and final day explicit
Use direct wording such as “Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation.” Name your position and organization, then state the exact date you intend to finish work. Avoid relying on phrases such as “in two weeks,” which can be unclear without a date.

Give only as much explanation as you want
“Due to family responsibilities” or “for personal reasons” is generally enough for a letter. You do not need to include sensitive medical or family details in a general resignation letter. If you are requesting leave, an accommodation, or another specific workplace process, ask HR what information that process requires; a resignation letter and a leave request serve different purposes.
Keep the tone professional
A short expression of appreciation is appropriate if it reflects your experience. You can offer to document tasks or help hand work over, but only promise transition support that is realistic given your circumstances and remaining time.

Check your notice obligations before sending the letter
There is no basis for treating two weeks’ notice as a universal legal requirement. The University of Texas at El Paso Career Center’s 2025 resignation-letter sample presents at least two weeks as courteous notice and advises identifying the official last day. That is career-services etiquette, not a rule that applies to every job.
Review your employment agreement and workplace policies, and check the rules that apply where you work. Your obligations and the effects of leaving can depend on your location, employment category, and specific circumstances. Do not assume that a particular notice period, benefits continuation, or final-pay outcome applies to you.

Specialized federal guidance should not be mistaken for a general rule. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Severance Pay fact sheet describes a narrow reduction-in-force scenario in which a resignation can be treated as involuntary for severance purposes. Under the conditions it describes, resignations in other circumstances are voluntary and do not carry severance entitlement under that rule. This does not determine how a resignation will be treated for other workers or under other programs.

If you need time away because of a qualifying family or health circumstance, ask HR about leave before you resign. Under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Handy Reference Guide to the FLSA, eligible employees of covered employers may be entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for specified reasons. These include caring for a child, spouse, or parent with a serious health condition; the birth and care of a child; placement of a child for adoption or foster care; or the employee’s own serious health condition. Group health insurance is maintained during qualifying FMLA leave.
