In a 20 November 2025 submission to a Senate inquiry, QantasLink CEO Rachel Yangoyan wrote: “This decision is not about cost savings or profitability; it’s about improving reliability and setting us up for success as we embark on a significant period of fleet renewal.” That is the airline’s explanation for the change, rather than an independently established assessment of its effects.

How did the government and Senate committee respond?
On 1 October 2025, Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the government was disappointed and called for appropriate consultation, no job losses and no reduction in services. She said: “These bases are more than regional hubs, they provide local jobs and critical connectivity to our regions.”
The Senate committee later criticized how the decision was communicated and managed, and called for better support and consultation for affected employees and communities. It assessed that the move would permanently remove skilled aviation jobs from Canberra, Hobart and Mildura and could, over time, contribute to workers and their families leaving those areas.
