PayPal supports an authenticator app for 2-step verification (two-factor authentication, or 2FA). For a U.S. account, set it up on PayPal’s website in a browser: open Settings → Security → Set Up beside “2-step verification,” choose “Use an authenticator app,” then follow the on-screen prompts. PayPal names Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator as examples. PayPal’s U.S. instructions and its North America guidance specify browser setup rather than setup in the PayPal app.
What PayPal authenticator verification does
An authenticator app generates a code you enter when PayPal asks for the second step of verification. It is a supported way to receive a verification code for PayPal 2-step verification, not a separate PayPal-branded authenticator. Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator are examples PayPal lists; follow the instructions displayed in your account when linking an app.
PayPal’s available controls can vary by region and account. The steps below reflect PayPal’s U.S. help instructions, so use the labels shown after signing in if they differ.
How to turn on an authenticator app for PayPal
- Open PayPal’s website in a web browser and sign in. PayPal says this setup is done in a browser, not in the PayPal app.
- Select the Settings icon.
- Open Security.
- Select Set Up next to “2-step verification.”
- Choose Use an authenticator app and complete the on-screen instructions to link the app.
You do not need to buy a physical authenticator device for the documented U.S. setup; the named authenticator options are software apps.

Keep codes private: PayPal says it will never ask you to provide a 2-step verification code by phone, email, or text. Do not share a code with anyone who contacts you claiming to be PayPal. PayPal’s security guidance explains its verification options and this warning.
Authenticator app, text, app prompt, and passkey: what is different?
| Method | What you do | How it relates to verification |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticator app | Enter a code generated by an authenticator app. | A code option for PayPal 2-step verification; availability can depend on account and region. |
| SMS | Enter a one-time code sent by text. | Another one-time-code option listed on PayPal’s U.S. security page; it is distinct from an authenticator-app code. |
| PayPal app prompt | Confirm an identity-check request in the PayPal app when prompted. | A contextual identity-confirmation route, not the same thing as entering an authenticator code. PayPal may offer it depending on the circumstances. |
| Passkey | Sign in using a passkey associated with a device, typically confirmed with that device’s unlock method. | A separate password alternative, not an authenticator-app code. PayPal says biometric data is not shared with PayPal when a passkey uses biometrics. |
PayPal may request an additional identity check because of circumstances such as signing in on a new device or unusual activity. It may remember a device to make later access easier, but it can still ask for verification. The available prompts and delivery methods are not guaranteed to be identical for every sign-in. See PayPal’s identity-confirmation guidance for context.

If the authenticator setting is missing or you cannot sign in
The setting is not visible
Sign in on PayPal’s website in a browser and inspect Settings → Security. Look for the 2-step verification control using the wording currently shown in your account. PayPal’s published U.S. steps describe this location, but they do not establish that every country or account has identical controls. If the option still is not available, consult the official PayPal help for your region.
You cannot access your usual verification method
Use Try another way, or the equivalent option PayPal displays, rather than assuming a particular recovery route will appear. Depending on the situation, PayPal says it may offer checks such as a text, phone call, email, app prompt, information questions, security questions, or card confirmation. Keep the contact information on your account current, and contact official PayPal support if the offered choices do not restore access. Its identity-check help and 2-step verification help describe possible methods, not a universal recovery guarantee.

You lost a device with a passkey
PayPal’s passkey guidance says you can still sign in with a password or one-time passcode if a device is lost or stolen, and recommends removing that device’s passkey from your PayPal account. When deleting a passkey, PayPal says to remove it from both the PayPal account and the device’s password manager. This is passkey guidance; it does not recover an authenticator app’s linked setup or codes. See PayPal’s passkey help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Turning authenticator verification off
PayPal’s North America guidance says 2-step verification can be turned on or off through account settings in a web browser rather than the PayPal app. If you choose to disable it, review the current options in Settings → Security and keep your account contact details current. PayPal also describes passkeys and the PayPal app as other identity-confirmation routes, but their availability depends on the account and situation. See PayPal’s browser instructions.
