Maine’s 2025 breach notice lists 364,333 people affected nationwide, including 661 Maine residents, after a LexisNexis Risk Solutions incident. The filing dates the breach to December 25, 2024, and says it was discovered May 14, 2025. What happened in the LexisNexis breach?
Maine’s Attorney General notice describes an external system breach and reports 364,333 affected people nationwide, including 661 Maine residents. Those are the figures in the state filing, not an independently audited count. Maine Attorney General breach notice
In a May 28, 2025 report, TechCrunch said LexisNexis connected the incident to a third-party software development platform. The report attributed to company spokesperson Jennifer Richman that an unknown hacker accessed the company’s GitHub account. The state filing’s description and the company’s reported technical explanation are distinct; the available sources do not establish a complete technical root cause. TechCrunch report
When did it happen?
Maine’s notice lists December 25, 2024, as the incident date and May 14, 2025, as the discovery date. TechCrunch reported that LexisNexis said it received a third-party claim of access on April 1, 2025. That reported claim date is separate from both the incident date and the filing’s discovery date. Richman described the claim as coming “from an unknown third party claiming to have accessed certain information,” according to Zack Whittaker’s report. TechCrunch report

What personal information may have been exposed?
The categories named in the notices include names, dates of birth, phone numbers, postal and email addresses, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers. What should you do if you received a LexisNexis breach letter?
- Read your notice carefully. Confirm which information the letter says was involved, the identity-protection offer available to you, its enrollment deadline, and any instructions for activating it. Terms may differ by state and recipient.
- Use the included protection if it fits your needs. Maine’s filing says affected Maine residents were offered 24 months of complimentary Experian credit monitoring and identity protection. - Check your financial accounts and credit reports. Look for unfamiliar transactions or accounts and contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or credit bureau if you find something you do not recognize. Monitoring can help you spot signs of misuse; it does not prevent someone from attempting to use stolen information.
- Consider a credit freeze if you want to restrict new credit applications. A freeze is a separate step from monitoring. Contact each of the three nationwide credit bureaus directly for its current process and keep any credentials or confirmation details they provide. You may need to lift a freeze temporarily when applying for credit.
- Be cautious about follow-up messages. A breach notice can prompt convincing impersonation attempts. Verify unexpected requests through contact information on a trusted statement or official website, and do not share passwords, verification codes, or payment information in response to an unsolicited message.
