Infinity Castle set major records for anime and Japanese films, while a separate North American record is sometimes confused with an all-time international ranking. Marvel Japan reported on October 5, 2026, that Endgame reclaimed the all-time worldwide box-office record after its Encore rerelease.
Which Demon Slayer movie is the claim about?
It refers to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, which opened in Japan in July 2025 before rolling out internationally. The film’s success produced several genuine records, but those records describe particular categories and markets—not an established win over Endgame in all-time international gross.
What records did Infinity Castle set?
Anime and Japanese-film records
In an interim report dated September 23, 2025, Crunchyroll said the film had earned more than US$555 million worldwide. That report included ¥34.01 billion in Japan, reported as US$229.85 million, and US$269 million in Crunchyroll/Sony markets. Crunchyroll described it at that point as the highest-grossing anime and Japanese film worldwide. These were dated figures during the film’s continuing rollout, not a final lifetime total. North American international-film record
In April 2026, Crunchyroll reported that the Japanese run had reached ¥40.2 billion through April 9, on 27,455,968 tickets sold. Its report also described Infinity Castle as the highest-grossing international film in North America. “International” here means a regional category in the North American market; it does not mean the film led the all-time international box-office chart worldwide. - Tanjiro Kamado, joined with Inosuke Hashibira, a boy raised by boars who wears a boar's head, and Zenitsu Agatsuma, a scared boy who reveals his true power when he sleeps, board the Infinity Train on a new mission with the Fire Pillar, Kyojuro Rengoku, to defeat a demon who has been tormenting the people and killing the demon slayers who oppose it!
What do the box-office totals say about the comparison?
Box-office comparisons need matching dates and territory definitions. Worldwide gross combines a film’s domestic market with its international markets; international gross generally excludes the film’s domestic market, though databases and studio reports can define territories differently. A North American international-film record, an anime record, and an all-time international total are therefore not interchangeable.
Box Office Mojo listed Infinity Castle at US$656,643,738 in international gross, or 82.7% of its listed gross, when accessed October 8, 2026. That is a changing third-party tracker figure, not a final studio statement. Box Office Mojo’s listing

For a sense of how reporting snapshots vary, the Associated Press reported Comscore estimates of US$177.8 million worldwide after the North American opening weekend, including a US$70 million North American debut. That early estimate and the later tracker listing describe different reporting dates and should not be combined into a precise head-to-head margin. Associated Press opening-weekend report
What changed for Avengers: Endgame?
Marvel Japan said on October 5, 2026, that Avengers: Endgame reclaimed the all-time worldwide box-office record after its Encore rerelease. Its announcement attributes figures to Box Office Mojo and uses an exchange rate of ¥157 per US dollar. The announcement addresses the worldwide record; it does not provide a harmonized, same-date international-gross comparison with Infinity Castle. Marvel Japan’s October 2026 announcement

Why the headline claim is misleading
- It mixes categories. Being the highest-grossing anime or Japanese film is not the same as being the highest-grossing film internationally across all titles.
- It confuses a regional label with a global ranking. The North American “international film” record refers to films from outside that market’s domestic industry, not all international receipts worldwide.
- It treats changing totals as if they were final and directly comparable. Both films had rereleases or continuing theatrical activity, and totals can vary by reporting date, currency conversion, and territory definition.
Box-office gross is ticket sales, not studio profit or the amount a distributor ultimately receives. The cited reports establish the films’ scale and category records, but not that Infinity Castle surpassed Endgame internationally on a like-for-like basis.
