A text saying you paid someone through Square does not, by itself, mean money left your account. Check your card or bank activity through your issuer’s official app, statement, or website that you open yourself. If you find an unfamiliar transaction, contact the card issuer promptly; if you find none, treat the text as unverified.
First, do not use the text to investigate
Do not click a link, reply with personal or financial information, or call a phone number included in the message. Square says phishing attempts can arrive by text and lead people to fake websites or phone systems. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2023 guidance likewise advises not clicking a company’s text link even if the message might be genuine. Instead, open your card issuer’s official app or website independently, or use the phone number printed on your card.
Check whether a transaction actually appears
Look through your card or bank account activity for a transaction matching the message. A receipt text and a card transaction are different evidence: the text alone does not establish that you were charged.
If you find no unfamiliar transaction
Square says receipt details can be associated with a phone number because someone other than the card owner supplied it or a seller entered it incorrectly. That makes a mistaken receipt one possible explanation, but it does not authenticate the message. Report or block the text using your carrier’s available tools, and use Square’s official support or reporting channels found independently rather than any contact details in the message.

If you find an unfamiliar transaction
Contact the bank or credit card issuer promptly using its official app or the number on your card, and ask how to dispute the charge. Square directs cardholders to the issuing bank or credit institution for confirmed unauthorized charges; Square says it cannot refund a buyer on behalf of a Square merchant.
Could the Square text be genuine?
Square says it may send SMS messages about unusual account activity, account access and recovery, two-step verification, or customer service inquiries when a phone number is linked to an account. It also says a customer can provide a phone number to receive a text receipt. Those possibilities do not prove that an unexpected payment text is genuine.
