Because the ranking mixes release types, readers looking specifically for the best-selling studio album should not treat the first three entries as a studio-album-only comparison: the third entry is a greatest-hits compilation. The source’s ordering is useful as a single database’s estimate list, but it does not establish a uniform sales method for every release.

Why sales estimates and RIAA certifications give different numbers
Worldwide sales estimates and U.S. RIAA certification units measure different things. BestSellingAlbums.org presents release-level estimated sales; RIAA awards are U.S. certifications, and the RIAA counting framework includes digital sales from 2004 and on-demand streams from 2013, as described in Eminem’s March 8, 2022 certification announcement.
That announcement reported 61.5 million RIAA album certification units for Eminem as of that date. It is a U.S. program figure, not a count of worldwide physical copies. Guinness World Records reports 12 million U.S. RIAA units for The Eminem Show and 11 million for The Marshall Mathers LP, with the latest awards dated March 8, 2022. Those figures are not direct alternatives to the database’s global estimates.

Why published worldwide figures for The Marshall Mathers LP differ
The official Eminem anniversary page says The Marshall Mathers LP “has sold 25 million copies worldwide.” BestSellingAlbums.org estimates 18,912,631. The sources do not provide enough information to reconcile these figures, so neither should be silently substituted for the other: the 25-million statement is the artist store’s published claim, while the lower figure is the database’s estimate.
Interscope’s artist profile says Eminem has sold over 130 million albums and 389 million singles worldwide, but does not date those career totals. The label also says Music To Be Murdered By sold over 279,000 units on release and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking his ninth consecutive studio album to do so. These are Interscope’s published claims, separate from the release estimates in the table.
