There is no single best crypto exchange for every reader: the right choice depends on your country, trading style, custody preference, and what you mean by “reviews.” For a published risk benchmark, CoinDesk’s May 2026 ranking placed Bitstamp first, followed by Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance. For the lowest listed spot trading fee among the examples available here, Binance was lowest—but that does not establish the lowest total cost for your trade. No harmonized customer-rating comparison establishes which exchange has the best reviews.
How to read this ranking
“Best” can mean a strong score in an editorial benchmark, a low trading fee, a convenient app, or positive customer feedback. Those are different measures, and none by itself establishes that an exchange is right for you. This comparison uses CoinDesk’s 2026 Exchange Benchmark for a method-specific ranking, published fee examples from Coin Bureau, and consumer research from the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Consumer Reports. Each source measures something different.
Availability and protections also depend on the exact company operating the service in your country. A global brand name does not establish that every local entity offers the same products, licenses, safeguards, or terms. Check the entity and product available to you before opening an account.
Which crypto exchange is safest?
There is no evidence here that can establish one exchange as universally safest. CoinDesk’s May 2026 Exchange Benchmark assessed 75 exchanges using more than 100 metrics across eight risk categories, including security, legal and regulatory factors, transparency, market quality, and negative events. Its results are a comparative benchmark, not a safety guarantee or a personalized assessment.

Scores and ranks are from CoinDesk Research’s 2026 Exchange Benchmark, with data as of May 2026. A different methodology, later events, or the rules and operating entity in your country could change which service is the better fit.
What security evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Look at security as several questions rather than a single badge: how account access is protected, whether withdrawals can be restricted or reviewed, how customer assets are held, what reserve information is independently checkable, what regulatory status applies locally, and how past incidents were handled. A company’s own security page can describe its controls and claims, but it is not independent verification.
For example, Kraken’s comparison page reports that a company-published reserve snapshot dated June 30, 2026 showed BTC reserves at 102.9%, ETH at 100.5%, SOL at 100.6%, and XRP at 102.3% of client holdings. Those figures describe the assets and snapshot reported by Kraken; they do not by themselves establish that every liability is covered, that a customer can recover funds in every scenario, or that the result applies to other assets or dates.

The same Kraken page says Coinbase disclosed in May 2025 that bribed overseas support contractors accessed internal tools, affecting personal information for roughly 69,000 customers. This was a reported data-security incident; the cited account does not characterize it as theft of customers’ crypto. Incident history is relevant, but it should be weighed alongside current controls and the exact service entity rather than treated as a complete measure of present security.

Among the specific examples published by Coin Bureau in October 2026, Binance spot has the lowest listed maker and taker rates. The figures below are that publisher’s comparison, not a live quote or a universal rate for every country, account, or order.

These percentages apply to the specified spot or trading products and tiers. Coin Bureau’s comparison also covers other exchanges with different product and regional qualifications. Fees can change, and the product, location, trading volume, and execution route all matter; check the current schedule for the exact account you plan to use.
Compare the cost of the transaction, not just the fee line
A trading fee is only one part of what you pay. Compare the quoted buy or sell price with the market price, plus any funding, withdrawal, or network charges and any conditions required to qualify for a lower tier. Consumer Reports’ August 4, 2026 evaluation of Binance.US, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Gemini, and Kraken found that buying and selling spot crypto in the apps was often straightforward, while pricing and risks could be harder to find. It also warned that a spread can impose a meaningful cost even when a displayed fee is low or zero. Its findings apply to those five selected apps and its evaluation method, not every exchange or country.

Which crypto exchange has the best reviews?
The available evidence does not establish a single exchange with the best customer reviews. App-store stars, editorial scores, consumer surveys, complaints, and user counts are not interchangeable. No comparable cross-exchange customer star-rating dataset is established here, so a numerical “best reviewed” winner would be misleading.
The FCA’s 2025 UK wave 6 research surveyed 1,044 people and found that exchange users considered ease of use (50%), reputation (39%), safety and security (34%), and transaction cost (30%) when choosing. These are reported selection considerations in a UK survey, not satisfaction ratings or a universal ranking of priorities.
In a separate FCA 2025 result, Coinbase had been used by 61% and Binance by 44% of surveyed exchange users. Those are ever-used figures, not ratings, recommendations, or proof of service quality. Consumer Reports’ app evaluation provides qualitative observations for five named apps rather than a common numerical score for every exchange.

Which exchange is the better fit?
Use the benchmark and fee figures as starting points, then match the service to how you actually plan to trade and hold assets. Coin Bureau’s October 2026 comparison characterizes Coinbase as beginner-oriented, Binance as suited to advanced traders and liquidity, and Kraken as security- and compliance-oriented. These are the publisher’s descriptions, not guarantees of suitability or identical availability in every location.
- If you prioritize a published benchmark: Bitstamp ranked first in CoinDesk’s May 2026 benchmark. Review the scoring method and verify that the relevant Bitstamp entity and products are available where you live.
- If you are comparing the listed entry-level trading examples: Binance spot had the lowest rates among the three examples in the fee table. Check your local entity, product, quoted price, and all other charges before choosing on cost.
- If you want a beginner-oriented experience: Coin Bureau labels Coinbase beginner-oriented, while Consumer Reports found spot buying and selling easy in its selected app evaluations. Neither finding establishes that all pricing or risks are easy to understand.
- If you use a professional trading interface: The cited examples distinguish Coinbase Advanced and Kraken Pro from their broader brands. Compare the exact product’s schedule and trading tools, rather than assuming a brand’s rate applies across all order paths.
Before you open an account
- Confirm the local service. Identify the legal entity, country eligibility, available products, and applicable registration or licensing. Do not infer local regulatory status from a global brand.
- Check the complete cost for your intended transaction. Review the current fee schedule, order type and tier, quote or spread, funding method, withdrawal charge, and network fee.
- Review account and custody controls. Check login protections, withdrawal safeguards, asset custody information, reserve reporting, and the limits of any fund or reimbursement claim.
- Choose a review source that measures what you care about. Note whether it reports user satisfaction, app usability, complaints, editorial scoring, or simply how many people have used a service.
- Decide who will control the assets. Keeping crypto at an exchange leaves custody with the service. Moving it to a self-custody wallet puts private-key protection and recovery responsibility on you. A hardware wallet is an optional physical device for self-custody, not a requirement for comparing exchange fees and not a way to make an exchange more secure.
Bottom line
CoinDesk’s May 2026 benchmark gives Bitstamp the highest score among the exchanges listed, while the cited fee comparison gives Binance spot the lowest headline rates among its three examples. Neither answers which exchange has the best customer reviews, and neither is enough to select a service without checking your local entity, total transaction cost, and custody needs.
