In an interview with the New York Post, Peloton co-founder and former CEO John Foley said he had lost his money and had to sell almost everything in his life. Fortune reported the statement on August 27, 2024. It was Foley’s account of his personal finances—not a figure verified by Peloton’s corporate filings.
What John Foley said about his finances
Fortune reported that, when asked whether his money was “in the bank,” Foley replied: “Not actually [in the bank], unfortunately. I’ve lost all my money. I’ve had to sell almost everything in my life.” The statement was made in an interview with the New York Post and reported by Fortune on August 27, 2024. Fortune’s report is the source for the quote and the details of Foley’s personal account.
Fortune also reported that Foley downsized twice and sold a waterfront home in East Hampton for $55 million. That is a reported sale value, not an estimate of his current wealth or the amount he received after any costs, debts, or other financial obligations. No audited personal financial disclosure is cited for his statement.
Why the headline calls him Peloton’s CEO
Foley co-founded Peloton and served as its CEO, but he left the role in February 2022. The “CEO” in the headline is historical shorthand: he was not Peloton’s CEO when Fortune reported his statement in 2024.

His remarks came after a sharp change in conditions for Peloton. Fortune describes the company’s pandemic-era surge in demand for at-home workouts followed by softer demand as restrictions lifted and people returned to exercising outside. That reversal is relevant background, but it does not show that one event—or the company’s business decline alone—caused Foley’s reported personal financial position.
What Peloton’s filings establish—and what they do not
Peloton’s filings describe the company’s business, restructuring, risks, and financial results. They do not verify Foley’s private assets, debts, or net worth. Company performance and an individual founder’s personal finances are related only insofar as the evidence demonstrates; one cannot be used as a substitute for the other.

In its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, Peloton said it had approximately 6 million members as of June 30, 2025, across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Australia, and Austria. The company also wrote: “We have incurred operating losses each year since our inception in 2012 and may continue to incur net losses in the future.” These are company disclosures about Peloton, not measurements of Foley’s wealth.
