Pakistan’s central-bank-held foreign-exchange reserves rose by US$38.9 million, or about 0.18%, to US$21.4392 billion in the week ended September 25, 2026. But total liquid foreign-exchange reserves fell by US$39.7 million to US$26.7709 billion, as banks’ holdings declined. The two figures measure different holders, so they moved in opposite directions.
What changed in the week ended September 25?
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported US$21,439.2 million in foreign-exchange reserves held by the central bank, up US$38.9 million from the previous week. Associated Press of Pakistan reported the SBP statement on October 1, 2026, quoting it as saying: “During the week ended on 25-Sep-2026, SBP’s FX reserves increased by US$ 39 million to US$ 21,439.2 million”. The quoted US$39 million is rounded; the reported change is US$38.9 million. Associated Press of Pakistan
The increase was modest—about 0.18% week over week. It describes one reporting week, not a longer-term trend. The available reporting confirms the change but does not identify what caused it.
Why did SBP reserves rise while total reserves fell?
Total liquid foreign-exchange reserves include both SBP-held reserves and reserves held by banks. For September 25, the reported figures were:

| Measure | September 25, 2026 | Change from previous week |
|---|---|---|
| SBP-held reserves | US$21,439.2 million | Up US$38.9 million |
| Bank-held reserves | US$5,331.7 million | Down US$78.6 million |
| Total liquid foreign-exchange reserves | US$26,770.9 million | Down US$39.7 million |
The bank-held decrease is the arithmetic reason the total fell despite the SBP increase: the US$78.6 million decline in bank holdings more than offset the US$38.9 million gain at the central bank, leaving total reserves US$39.7 million lower. This explains the difference in direction; it does not explain why SBP’s own holdings increased. Mettis Global

Use the SBP-held figure when discussing the central bank’s reserves specifically: US$21.4392 billion on September 25. Use US$26.7709 billion when referring to total liquid foreign-exchange reserves across the central bank and banks. Naming the measure prevents the two figures from being mistaken for competing estimates of the same total.

These weekly liquid-reserve figures are also distinct from the monthly Official Reserve Assets series. SBP’s release calendar says weekly liquid foreign-exchange reserve data are released each Thursday for the position on the previous Friday. Its calendar listed September 2026 Official Reserve Assets for release no later than October 7; that schedule alone does not establish whether the release occurred or what it reported. SBP’s reserve metadata describes a broader international-reserve framework that includes foreign-exchange securities, deposits and currency, gold, and special drawing rights (SDRs); it says the IMF reserve position is presently zero. Because that metadata page appears old, it is methodological context, not a current breakdown or valuation of the September 25 weekly figures. SBP reserve metadata
