What Peloton announced
Peloton combined workforce and retail restructuring with a leadership change in its May 2, 2024 announcement. Its quarterly filing described the workforce plan as affecting roughly 400 team members; the company’s announcement put that at approximately 15% of global headcount. Peloton also said it would continue closing retail locations. Peloton’s Form 10-Q and its restructuring announcement filed with the SEC report the plan.
Those sources establish the announced scale, not a final tally of employees who ultimately lost their jobs or a schedule of individual departures.
Why Peloton said it was restructuring
Peloton said the restructuring was intended to position the company for sustained positive free cash flow. It also said it planned to keep investing in software, hardware, content, member support and marketing. These were the company’s stated aims for the plan, not proof that it had already achieved positive free cash flow or that the cuts alone would produce that result. The filed announcement sets out that rationale.

What changed in Peloton’s leadership
McCarthy said he would step down as Peloton’s president, CEO and board director, and serve as a strategic advisor through the end of 2024. Peloton said it would search for a permanent CEO. The company’s May 2 announcement describes the transition.
The board timing is distinct from the public announcement: Peloton’s SEC filing says McCarthy’s resignation as a director was effective April 28, 2024, four days before the company announced the leadership change. The Form 8-K filed May 2 records that effective date.

At the time, the Associated Press reported that board chair Karen Boone and director Chris Bruzzo would serve as interim co-CEOs while Peloton searched for a permanent successor. The AP’s May 2 report identifies the interim leaders.
