9 Summer Camps Historically Described as Exclusive—and What Families Should Know

A historical ranking of nine summer camps is not a current price guide. Learn what it names, how to compare today’s costs and why camp access is broader than the headline suggests.

A historical list titled “9 Most Exclusive Summer Camps for Rich Kids” names nine programs, but it is not a current ranking of the most expensive camps or a reliable guide to what families pay today. Its entries range from traditional residential camps to snowboarding, multi-activity and performing-arts programs. Treat the list as a starting point for research—not as a current price comparison or proof that camp is only for wealthy families.

What the historical list actually ranks

The list’s numbering is preserved below, including entries that share a position. It reflects that source’s ordering, not a verified current ranking by tuition, selectivity or access. The list’s historical prices—including a 2012 Raquette Lake rate and other figures from its 2014-era context—should not be used to estimate what a family would pay now.

Historical position Camp or camps named What the list establishes
9 Raquette Lake Camp Named in the historical list; current tuition and admissions details are not established here.
8 Brant Lake Camp; Point O’Pines Two camps share this position in the historical list; current comparative details are not established here.
7 Camp Cedar; Camp Mataponi Two camps share this position in the historical list; current comparative details are not established here.
6 Camp Takajo; Tripp Lake Two camps share this position in the historical list; current comparative details are not established here.
5 Timber Lake Camps Named in the historical list; current tuition and admissions details are not established here.
4 High Cascade Camp Named in the historical list as a summer snowboarding program; current tuition and admissions details are not established here.
3 Pali Adventures Named in the historical list as a multi-activity camp; current tuition and admissions details are not established here.
2 Camp Laurel Named in the historical list; current tuition and admissions details are not established here.
1 Stagedoor Manor Named in the historical list as a performing-arts camp; current tuition and admissions details are not established here.

For the original ordering, see the archived list. The available information does not establish current rates, session dates, age ranges, enrollment status or financial aid for most of these nine programs.

Why these camps are not a like-for-like comparison

The group includes traditional lake and residential camps, a snowboarding program, a multi-activity camp and a performing-arts camp. A price-only comparison would miss differences in program, session length and what a fee includes. Nor does a high historical price, by itself, establish that a camp remains unusually expensive or is inaccessible today.

When comparing options, look at the full cost and fit: tuition for the specific session, duration, eligible ages, location and travel, accommodation, included equipment, possible extra charges, and scholarships or financial aid. The original list does not provide a consistent, current measure of “exclusive,” so its title should not be read as a conclusion about who can attend.

How to check what a family would pay now

Rates and availability can change by year and session. Check the camp’s official admissions materials for the exact summer, then ask for a written breakdown of fees and what is included. For context, two current official pages show how different programs and session lengths can be; neither updates the historical nine-camp list.

Example Published details How to interpret it
Camp Birchmont For 2027, the official page lists $17,450 for a full seven-week session, $10,950 for a four-week first session and $9,450 for a three-week second session. It describes the camp as co-ed for ages 7–15. These are Birchmont’s listed 2027 session prices, not rates for any of the nine historical entries. Check the official Camp Birchmont rate page for current details.
Kidventure Quest The official page lists a July 26–August 3, 2026 session for ages 8–12 at $2,240 and describes adventure activities in Rocksprings, Texas. This is a specific Quest session, not a comparable price for a full residential summer. See the official Kidventure Quest page for details.

For each camp under consideration, verify the session dates, tuition, age eligibility, application status, what the fee covers, and any additional charges. Ask directly about aid if it is not clearly described online. For overnight programs, use the camp’s own packing list; Kidventure Quest, for example, says overnight campers must bring their own bedding. Requirements vary, so consult the program’s camp-preparation information.

Is sleepaway camp only for wealthy families?

No. The headline’s framing should not be generalized to summer camp as a whole. A 2018 New Hampshire Magazine feature described access through scouting, YMCA, charity-sponsored and religious camps, as well as scholarship funds. These options do not establish that every family can afford every camp, but they show why a list of costly or historically prominent programs cannot stand in for the full camp landscape. See the magazine’s discussion of camp access.

Families weighing cost against a specific benefit should also distinguish camp programming from claims about later outcomes. A report on academic summer camps quoted Education Unlimited admissions director Nermin Fraser describing access to instruction and materials, and Command Education program leader Christopher Rim calling his program intense and suited to students prepared to work hard. Those comments concern academic camps; they do not establish that the nine camps in the historical list improve college admissions or deliver a particular outcome. The related Associated Press report carried by Fox Business is about that separate college-preparation context.
