Topical lip plumpers can make lips look temporarily fuller, but they do not permanently enlarge lips or work like injectable filler. The nine options below were reviewed by editors at Allure, Glamour, or Prevention; they were not independently tested for this article. Their reported results, feel, and finish vary, so the best choice depends on whether you want a stronger tingle, a hydration-led look, color, or an overnight mask.

What a lip plumper can—and cannot—do

Plumping products generally aim for a temporary fuller-looking effect in two ways. Hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid draw water into the lips or help them look smoother and more cushioned. Irritating ingredients such as capsaicin, menthol, or cinnamon can prompt increased blood flow and slight localized swelling. As dermatologist Dr. Carmen Castilla explained to Prevention, “Hyaluronic acid will draw more water into the lip to make it appear fuller.” She also noted that irritation from ingredients such as capsaicin, menthol, and cinnamon can produce a temporary swelling effect. Neither mechanism is permanent enlargement.

A pronounced tingle is a sensation, not proof that a product will work better for you. Irritation can also mean discomfort or blotchiness. The editorial observations below belong to the publications and testers named in their coverage, not to independent testing for this article.

How the nine options compare

Product Reported profile Useful distinction Source
Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme / Maximum Plump Extra Strength Strong tingle and a noticeable result in Allure’s account; Glamour’s Dr. Shereen Teymour describes intense tingling. Consider only if you tolerate a strong sensation; Glamour flags potential concerns for people with eczema around the mouth or a tendency to cold sores. Allure; Glamour
Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Glossy, relatively subtle effect with a slight tingle; the cited coverage describes a comfortable, natural-looking result. Hyaluronic acid and hydration claims; an option if you want gloss without the strongest reported sensation. Allure; Glamour
Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Big Lip Plumpgasm Cooling-feel alternative to a typical stinging formula. Allure describes cayenne extract and cooling agents, with two nude shades for different skin tones. Allure
Valentino Puffer Complex Lip Plumper Gloss Sheer gloss. Allure lists peptides, peppermint oil, and hyaluronic acid; weigh that ingredient profile against your tolerance and preferred finish. Allure
Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Plump Color and shine with a comfortable tingle in Glamour’s tester account. Glamour reports 16 shades and lists hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and maracuja. Glamour
Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss Hydration-led, plumper-adjacent gloss framed by Glamour as fullness without the burn. Glamour lists konjac root, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and primrose oil. Glamour
Tatcha The Kissu Hydrating & Plumping Lip Mask Overnight mask format. Glamour tester Brooke reported waking with product still on and lips feeling soft; that is her experience, not a guaranteed result. The listed ingredients include Japanese peach extract, camellia oil, and squalane. Glamour
NYX Duck Plump High Pigment Lip Plumping Gloss Vivid, stronger-sensation option. Prevention tester Jamie Ballard reported pronounced, prolonged tingling; the article notes that some reviewers found it uncomfortable and advises caution for sensitive skin. Prevention
Dr. Dennis Gross DermInfusions Plump + Repair Lip Treatment Treatment rather than a conventional color gloss; Prevention’s tester reported powerful initial tingling and hydration. Prevention lists hyaluronic acid, peptides, ectoin, and bisabolol. Glamour cautions that its version may irritate sensitive skin or with overuse. Prevention; Glamour

Choose by sensation, finish, and format

  • For a stronger, more immediate-feeling gloss: Too Faced and NYX have the most prominent reported tingling in the cited coverage. Strong sensation is a trade-off, not a guarantee of a better result.
  • For a subtler glossy look: Dior’s reported slight tingle and natural-looking finish may suit someone who wants a less dramatic effect.
  • For cooling rather than a typical sting: Allure describes Charlotte Tilbury’s cooling feel; a cooling sensation does not mean a formula is irritation-free.
  • For color: Tarte combines pigment and shine and has 16 shades according to Glamour. NYX is described as high-pigment.
  • For hydration-led wear: Kosas is framed as a no-burn option, while Valentino’s listed ingredients include hyaluronic acid. These are different formulations, so compare the ingredient list and finish that matter to you.
  • For overnight care: Tatcha is a mask, not a daytime gloss; the reported soft-lip result comes from one Glamour tester.
  • For a treatment format: Dr. Dennis Gross is positioned as a lip treatment, though its reported initial tingle is powerful.

Reduce the chance of irritation

Allure cites cosmetic chemist Ginger King on the possibility that irritation-containing formulas may cause blotchiness and irritation, especially for very sensitive skin. Check each product’s ingredient list for known allergens; Allure suggests patch testing, but a patch test cannot guarantee you will not react. If you have eczema around your mouth, a tendency to cold sores, or sensitive lips, take particular care with strong-tingling products. Glamour specifically raises those concerns for the extra-strength Too Faced formula.

In the United States, the FDA says cosmetics and their ingredients do not need FDA approval before going to market, while companies and individuals marketing cosmetics are legally responsible for product safety.
