The “seeking $1 billion” headline referred to 8VC’s sixth fund in January 2025—not an open fundraising round today. The SEC filing then listed a $998 million offering with no sales reported; 8VC announced $998 million in new LP capital for Fund VI on March 4, 2025. In July 2026, The Information reported that the firm had raised a separate $1.5 billion seventh fund.

What the January 2025 headline meant

TechCrunch reported on January 29, 2025, that 8VC was seeking nearly $1 billion for Fund VI. The headline described a target at that time, rather than a completed fundraise. Its report followed 8VC’s February 2023 close of an $880 million Fund V, a figure also stated in the firm’s own announcement.

The distinction matters: a proposed offering amount in a regulatory filing is not proof that investors had already committed or that the fund had closed. The filing and the later announcement describe different stages of Fund VI’s fundraising.

What the SEC filing showed

8VC Fund VI, L.P.’s Form D, signed by Joseph Lonsdale on January 29, 2025, listed a $998 million total offering and $0 sold at filing. It also indicated that a first sale had yet to occur. The SEC record identifies the fund as a Delaware pooled venture-capital fund with a principal business address in Austin, Texas, and lists Lonsdale as a related person and managing member of the general partner.

A Form D is a filing, not an SEC endorsement: the form cautions that the commission has not necessarily reviewed it or determined that its information is accurate and complete. Read the filing as a snapshot of the offering at that point, not as evidence that $998 million had already been raised.

How Fund VI’s status changed

On March 4, 2025, 8VC announced: “We are proud to announce 8VC Fund VI, with $998 million in new LP capital.” That later statement describes the fund’s capital as raised, unlike the January filing’s $998 million offering amount and $0 sold at filing.

For comparison, 8VC’s March 1, 2023 announcement said Fund V had $880 million in new capital. These figures are fundraising amounts for different funds; they are not measures of investment performance, fund valuation, or investor returns.

The newer fund: 8VC Fund VII

On July 1, 2026, The Information reported that 8VC had raised a $1.5 billion seventh fund, describing it as the firm’s largest and saying it was aimed at manufacturing, defense technology, and healthcare. That report makes Fund VII the newer fundraising context for readers arriving from the 2025 headline.

What sectors 8VC says it focuses on

8VC’s Fund VI announcement described work across life sciences, healthcare, defense, logistics, enterprise, and education. Its current website lists life sciences, healthcare, manufacturing, enterprise, logistics, and defense. These are broad firm or fund themes, not a published allocation schedule; they do not establish how much any particular fund invests in each sector or that every fund covers all of them.
