8VC announced $880 million in new capital for Fund V on March 1, 2023. The firm said the fund would back entrepreneurs and help build companies, describing its mission as “to fix a broken world.” That figure is historical: on March 4, 2025, 8VC announced Fund VI with $998 million in new LP capital.

What does the $880 million figure refer to?

It refers to 8VC Fund V, which the venture-capital firm announced on March 1, 2023. 8VC called the amount “new capital” in its Fund V announcement.

The same announcement said 8VC was steward of over $6 billion in committed capital with Fund V. That is the firm’s description of its broader committed capital, not the size of Fund V. The announcement does not establish Fund V’s complete legal terms, closing status, returns, or investment pace.

What did 8VC say Fund V would do?

8VC said Fund V would support entrepreneurs and help create companies through its 8VC Build program. The firm described bringing people together to found businesses it wanted to back, with examples in healthcare, defense, logistics, finance, software, and biosciences. It also pointed to AI, genomic engineering, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare innovation as areas of change.

These are the firm’s stated strategy and examples, not evidence of investment performance or of results achieved. The phrase “to fix a broken world” is 8VC’s mission language; the announcement presents it as the firm’s own positioning rather than a measurable outcome.

How does Fund V compare with 8VC’s later Fund VI?

8VC announced Fund VI on March 4, 2025, with $998 million in new LP capital. The later announcement described themes including life sciences, healthcare, defense, logistics, enterprise, and education. The amounts use different wording—“new capital” for Fund V and “new LP capital” for Fund VI—and should not be treated as a performance comparison.

Fund Announcement date Stated capital Described themes
Fund V March 1, 2023 $880 million in new capital (8VC’s announcement) Healthcare, defense, logistics, finance, software, and biosciences; the firm also highlighted AI, genomic engineering, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare innovation.
Fund VI March 4, 2025 $998 million in new LP capital (8VC’s announcement) Life sciences, healthcare, defense, logistics, enterprise, and education.

8VC’s Fund VI announcement identifies the later fund and its themes. The SEC’s index also records a Form D notice for 8VC Fund VI, L.P., filed January 29, 2025; that filing record confirms the issuer and date, not the funds’ returns or full terms. See the SEC filing index.

What does 8VC mean by “to fix a broken world”?

It is the firm’s stated mission, not a separate fund term or a claim that Fund V had already produced a particular outcome. 8VC’s current about page describes its thesis cornerstones as infrastructure IT, biology, healthcare, government and defense, and logistics. That current positioning is distinct from the sectors specifically listed in the 2023 Fund V announcement.
