8 Reasons an Extended Car Warranty May Be a Bad Deal—or a Scam

A separately purchased vehicle service contract is not the same as a factory warranty. Here are eight reasons to review its price, exclusions, claims process, seller, and cancellation terms carefully.

An extended car warranty is usually a separately purchased vehicle service contract, not an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty in the legal sense. Some contracts may be useful, but others can duplicate existing coverage, exclude expected repairs, or come from sellers using deceptive tactics. Judge the specific contract and provider—not the sales pitch.

What an “extended car warranty” actually is

The phrase is commonly used in advertising, but a separately purchased auto service contract is distinct from a warranty as defined by federal law. Manufacturers, dealers, and independent companies may sell service contracts. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explain the distinction in their consumer guides: FTC: Auto Warranties and Service Contracts and CFPB: What is an extended warranty or vehicle service contract?

That distinction matters because the contract—not the label used by a salesperson—sets out what is covered, who must pay, and how to make a claim. The eight concerns below are reasons to scrutinize an offer, not proof that every service contract is fraudulent.

Eight reasons an offer deserves a closer look

1. It may duplicate your factory coverage

A contract can start while the manufacturer’s warranty is still active or cover repairs that are already included. Before buying, check the factory warranty’s remaining time and mileage, then compare those limits with the contract’s start date and coverage. The FTC specifically advises consumers to check whether a service contract duplicates existing manufacturer coverage.

2. The price and deductible may outweigh the protection

The FTC says service-contract prices can range from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars; that is a broad possible range, not an industry average. A deductible may also be due at each repair visit. Compare the full contract price, per-visit deductible, coverage limits, and the repairs the contract actually pays for. Those costs do not prove that every buyer will lose money, but they make a headline monthly payment an incomplete measure of value.

3. Exclusions may rule out repairs you expected

A list of covered components is only half the story. Read the exclusions and conditions, including maintenance requirements and rules about where repairs must be performed. An offer described as “comprehensive” may still leave important parts or circumstances outside coverage. FTC guidance cautions that exclusions and conditions can sharply limit what a contract pays.

4. Routine maintenance is often outside the contract

Do not assume a service contract pays for ordinary upkeep. The CFPB says vehicle service contracts typically exclude routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire replacement. Check the written terms for the specific services included rather than relying on the word “service.”

5. The claims process may limit your choices

A contract’s value depends on whether you can use it when a repair is needed and how reimbursement works. Before signing, find out who authorizes repairs, whether you must use a particular repair facility, what documentation is required, and when reimbursement is paid. Also check the deductible and any limits on towing or rental costs. FTC and CFPB consumer guidance recommends reviewing these terms before purchase.

6. The seller may not be the company responsible for paying claims

The business that sells a contract may differ from its administrator or the party financially responsible for coverage. Identify all of them in the written contract and check their reputations and complaint histories. The FTC warns that a telemarketing seller may no longer be in business when a consumer needs service; a persuasive sales call alone does not establish that a provider will honor its obligations.

7. An “your warranty is expiring” message may be a pressure tactic

Unsolicited calls, texts, or mail may imply a connection to your dealer or automaker that does not exist. Pressure to decide immediately, disclose financial information, or pay before receiving the full terms is a reason to stop and verify the offer independently with the dealer or manufacturer. Do not rely on a caller’s number or links in an unexpected message to establish who contacted you.

Deceptive sales have led to federal enforcement. The FTC said American Vehicle Protection used deceptive telemarketing, including pretending to represent dealers or manufacturers and making false “bumper to bumper” claims. In its 2022 announcement, then-Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said: “AVP blasted consumers with illegal calls and made bogus claims about bumper-to-bumper warranties.” In October 2024, the FTC announced it was sending more than $449,000 in refunds to consumers harmed by that specific scam. Those actions document misconduct in that case; they are not evidence that all service contracts or sellers are fraudulent. See the FTC’s 2022 announcement and 2024 refund announcement.

8. Cancellation rights do not tell you the refund amount

The CFPB says consumers have the right to cancel an extended warranty or vehicle service contract. That does not establish one refund formula for every contract or state. Read the signed agreement for the cancellation procedure, deadlines, and refund calculation, and check applicable state rules if the terms are unclear.

How to evaluate a contract before paying

Get the complete contract—not just a brochure, quote, or salesperson’s summary—and use it to compare the offer with your current coverage. The agencies’ guidance supports checking the following terms:

  • Total cost: contract price, per-visit deductible, and any stated coverage limits.
  • Existing coverage: overlap with the factory warranty and when the service contract begins.
  • Coverage scope: covered components, exclusions, term, and mileage limit.
  • Conditions: required maintenance, approved repair facilities, and records you must keep.
  • Claims: who authorizes repairs, documentation required, reimbursement timing, and towing or rental limits.
  • Responsibility: seller, administrator, and entity responsible for paying covered claims.
  • Cancellation: how to cancel and how any refund is calculated.

Official guidance does not rank providers or establish a universal average price, denial rate, or buyer loss rate. Consider whether setting aside money for repairs would suit your circumstances better than paying for a contract; the choice depends on the contract’s terms and your ability to handle repair costs.

What to do if you receive a suspicious offer or have a dispute

  1. Do not pay or share financial information under pressure. Ask for the full contract and time to review it.
  2. Verify the claimed affiliation independently. Contact your dealer or manufacturer using contact details you already trust, not details supplied in an unsolicited pitch.
  3. Identify the responsible companies. Check the seller, administrator, and coverage obligor named in the agreement, along with available reputational and complaint information.
  4. If a claim or cancellation goes wrong, contact the seller or contract company. Keep the agreement, payment records, maintenance documents, and communications.
  5. Report suspected misconduct. The FTC advises consumers to report problems to the FTC and their state attorney general or consumer-protection office. Its guidance is available at Auto Warranties and Service Contracts and Extended Warranties and Service Contracts.

This is general U.S. consumer guidance. Contract terms and state rules can differ, so the signed agreement and applicable state law govern the details of an individual purchase.
