8 Practical Ways to Save on Groceries

You can make a grocery budget go further by planning around food you already own, comparing the actual cost of similar products, and buying only what your household is likely to use. These eight habits are practical starting points—not a ranked list or a promise of a set dollar saving. Prices and promotions vary by store and location.

1. Plan meals around food you already have

Before shopping, check the pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. Note ingredients that need to be used soon, then plan meals and snacks that include them. USDA SNAP-Ed recommends planning meals and snacks as a way to stretch food dollars: “Plan your weekly meals and snacks.”

Build the list from those meals, adding only ingredients you need. This helps prevent buying another item you already have and makes it easier to use food before it spoils.

2. Shop with a list and a plan

Keep your meal plan and shopping list available while you shop. If possible, shop after eating; USDA SNAP-Ed includes this as a way to help shoppers stick to a list. A list is most useful when it reflects actual meals, household preferences, and the food already on hand—not an idealized plan that may go unused.

3. Compare unit prices, not just package prices

When comparing similar products in different sizes, look for the unit price on the shelf label. It expresses the cost per a standard amount, such as an ounce or pound, so you can compare packages more fairly. USDA SNAP-Ed advises shoppers to “Locate the ‘Unit Price’ on the shelf directly below the product.”

A lower total price or sale tag does not necessarily mean a better per-unit deal. Compare products that meet the same need, and check the Nutrition Facts if differences in ingredients or nutrition matter to your household. The lowest unit price is not a bargain if the product will not be used.

4. Check sales and coupons against your list

Review store circulars, online offers, and coupons before or during your shopping trip, but use them to adjust a plan—not replace it. A discount only helps if it applies to food your household normally eats and brings the checkout price down compared with a realistic alternative. Check any size, brand, or quantity conditions before counting an offer as a deal.

5. Compare store brands

Try a store-brand version of products your household buys regularly and compare its unit price with the familiar brand. Store brands can be a lower-cost option, but prices and product differences vary; do not assume every store-brand item is cheaper or identical. Choose based on the cost, the product’s suitability, and whether your household will use it.

6. Build meals around lower-cost ingredients

USDA guidance identifies beans and eggs as low-cost protein foods. They can anchor meals or complement smaller portions of more expensive ingredients. Stews, casseroles, and stir-fries can also spread an ingredient across several portions. Choose meals and portion sizes that suit the people eating them; stretching a dish only helps if it is satisfying and gets eaten.

7. Try seasonal or frozen produce when it fits

USDA recommends buying produce in season and identifies frozen vegetables as a lower-cost option. Compare prices where you shop and select the form that works for the meal and is most likely to be used. There is no universal cheapest choice among fresh, frozen, and canned produce: local prices, intended use, and spoilage risk differ.

8. Store food promptly and use leftovers

Put fresh food away promptly, and plan to use fresh fruit, vegetables, and milk before they spoil. If you buy a larger amount of meat, poultry, or fish, divide it into meal-size portions and freeze what you will not use soon. Freezer-safe containers can make portioning easier, but purchasing containers is optional and does not itself guarantee savings.

Use leftovers in a planned meal, such as lunch the next day, rather than treating them as extra food with no place in the week’s plan. The goal is to use what you buy, not simply to buy a larger quantity.

How to decide whether a deal is actually cheaper

Before choosing between two products, check four things:

  • Unit price: Compare cost per the same quantity for products that are genuinely similar.
  • Fit: Make sure the item works for the meal and any nutrition needs that matter to your household.
  • Use: Consider whether you will use it before it spoils or loses quality.
  • Checkout cost: Include applicable discounts and any purchase conditions in the final price.

For bulk purchases, also consider whether you have storage space, freezer capacity, and a realistic plan to use each portion. A lower unit price can be outweighed by waste if the food is not used.

What these habits can—and cannot—promise

USDA SNAP-Ed and MyPlate materials recommend planning, lists, price comparisons, lower-cost ingredients, and reducing food waste. They do not quantify how much each habit saves or rank these approaches against one another, so no specific savings amount is guaranteed. Your results depend on local prices, household needs, and how much food you use.

For U.S. households using SNAP

SNAP benefits can be used for eligible household food, including fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy, breads and cereals, other foods, and seeds or plants that produce food; nonfood household items are not eligible. See the USDA’s current list of foods SNAP can buy. Eligibility and benefit amounts depend on current rules and household circumstances.

The USDA Thrifty Food Plan is a low-cost nutritious food basket that informs maximum SNAP benefit allotments; it is not a guarantee of an individual household’s grocery costs. USDA Economic Research Service reports that an average of 42.1 million people participated in SNAP per month in FY 2025, with annual federal program costs of $101.7 billion; SNAP accounted for 69 percent of USDA nutrition-assistance spending that fiscal year. Those program figures provide context, not estimates of how much an individual shopper can save. See the USDA Economic Research Service SNAP overview and USDA Food Plans.
