This guide draws a practical shortlist from Travel + Leisure’s 2026 packable-hat testing and recommendations, with relevant fashion and UPF details from Oprah Daily and NBC Select. The picks cover different priorities—from a wide brim and ventilation to a foldable straw look—so choose by coverage, fit, and how you plan to pack it.
How to choose a packable sun hat
Match UPF to coverage
UPF measures how much UV radiation passes through fabric, not how much of your face, ears, or neck the hat shades. NBC Select explains that UPF 50 permits about 1/50th of UV transmission—roughly 2 percent—while UPF 50+ permits less than 2 percent. Brim shape and width matter too: Travel + Leisure recommends a brim at least 3 inches wide for fuller coverage; shorter bucket brims do not shade the shoulders or back. A hat complements rather than replaces sunscreen.
A rating should be treated as a product claim, not a universal guarantee about every hat labeled for sun. Compare the cited rating for the particular model and variant you are considering.
Balance packability, ventilation, and fit
Flexible fabric hats may fold or roll readily, while stiff brims can crease or lose shape if repeatedly crushed. In heat, vents and a sweatband can improve comfort, but a more structured or protective design may feel less breathable. Measure your head circumference and use the model’s size chart; drawcords and adjustable straps can help fine-tune fit, while one-size designs will not suit everyone.

How to pack a sun hat without damaging it
- Check the construction. A flexible fabric hat may be designed to roll or fold; do not assume that a stiff brim or structured crown can be crushed repeatedly without changing shape.
- Protect a rigid hat in your suitcase. Travel + Leisure recommends placing it on top of clothing and protecting the crown, rather than burying it beneath heavier items.
- Follow the product’s care guidance. The cited guides do not provide a single packing or cleaning method that applies to every material, so check the specific maker’s instructions before washing or reshaping it.
What the expert guidance means for sun protection
NBC Select quotes board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman: “Topical SPF is a great tool, but it also isn’t perfect. Chemical sunscreens must be fully absorbed to work, which takes 30 minutes after application,” A hat adds physical shade, but its fabric rating alone cannot tell you whether the brim covers the areas you need protected.
