The right goal-setting template depends on what you’re trying to achieve, who needs to act, and how often you want to review progress. Use a SMART worksheet to define one goal, a plan to manage several steps or people, or a daily-to-monthly tracker to turn a longer aim into regular actions. A template organizes decisions and follow-ups; the sources describe formats, not proof that using one guarantees results.

Which goal-setting template should you use?

Start with the planning job you need the template to do. A single goal statement calls for a lighter worksheet; a goal with dependencies, several people, or recurring actions needs room for ownership and review.

Template Best suited to What it helps organize
SMART goal worksheet One goal that needs a clear definition and deadline Specific outcome, measures, timing, and sometimes purpose, challenges, steps, and progress
Goal-setting plan A goal with multiple steps, deadlines, or contributors Actions, priorities, owners, timelines, obstacles, and possible solutions
Goal tracker Several goals with different time horizons Categories, priorities, progress, and weekly through yearly views
Daily goal tracker Breaking a larger aim into today’s work Schedule, task checkboxes, and notes
Weekly goal-setting and review sheet Choosing near-term priorities and learning from the week Priorities, outcomes, obstacles, and next actions
Monthly tracker Connecting weekly tasks to a monthly target Status, challenges, and plans for the next month
Personal goal template Organizing goals across life areas and time horizons Personal, professional, or financial goals, with action steps
Project goals and objectives template A team aligning project work to organizational aims A main project goal, measurable objectives, and broader goals

These are format recommendations based on the publishers’ descriptions, not an independent ranking or test. Smartsheet’s collection also lists employee, business, staff, student, financial, and career versions, so a more specific audience may be better served by one of those options.

1. SMART goal worksheet

Choose a SMART worksheet when you have a broad intention—such as improving savings, paying down debt, or building an emergency fund—and need to define what success would mean and when you will assess it. The acronym is not expanded identically by every publisher, so follow the definition printed on the worksheet you use.

  • The University of Wisconsin–Madison Department of Psychiatry uses Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound in its SMART Goal worksheet.
  • The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) resource uses Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely in its Data Quality Improvement Plan Goal Setting Form.

Vertex42’s SMART Goals Template adds practical planning fields: purpose, challenges, key steps, and a progress log. That makes it useful when writing a goal alone is not enough and you also need to think through what might get in the way. Vertex42 notes that multiple SMART definitions are in use.

AHRQ describes its worksheet as a way to break a data-quality improvement plan into smaller, shorter-term SMART goals. The page identifies the University of Colorado Practice Innovation Program as the worksheet’s institution of origin. AHRQ records publication on April 29, 2022, and review in April 2022; the tool is designed for a quality-improvement context, not specifically household budgeting.

2. Goal-setting plan

Use a plan when a goal requires more than one action or involves other people. Smartsheet describes fields for actionable steps, priorities, responsible parties, timelines, obstacles, and proposed solutions. For a shared savings target, for example, you could use the plan to assign who will compare recurring bills, when the decision is due, and what alternative to consider if the first option does not work.

This format is more useful than a simple goal statement when coordination is the main challenge. If you are planning alone and the goal has only one or two obvious next steps, a concise worksheet may be easier to maintain.

3. Goal tracker

A goal tracker suits people keeping several goals in view at once. Smartsheet describes formats with category and priority groupings, progress charts, and weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly views. This can help separate goals such as reducing a balance, building savings, and completing a career milestone instead of treating them as one undifferentiated to-do list.

Before choosing a tracker, decide how you will judge progress. A chart is useful only if you can enter meaningful updates—for example, a balance, a contribution, a completed milestone, or a dated check-in.

4. Daily goal tracker

A daily tracker is for translating a longer-term goal into today’s tasks. The Smartsheet format described includes a schedule, completion checkboxes, and notes. It can help when the main problem is deciding what to do next, rather than defining the overall goal.

Use it to capture a small number of actions that plausibly move the larger goal forward. A daily checklist is not itself a measure of the final outcome, so pair it with a separate progress measure when the goal requires one.

5. Weekly goal-setting and review sheet

A weekly sheet combines forward planning with reflection: prioritize the coming week, then record what happened, what got in the way, and what to do next. Smartsheet describes a format organized around weekly priorities, outcomes, obstacles, and next actions.

This cadence is a practical middle ground when daily tracking feels too detailed but monthly reviews are too far apart to adjust plans. Keep the review focused on decisions: continue an action, revise it, or remove an obstacle.

6. Monthly tracker

Choose a monthly tracker when you want to connect weekly tasks to a broader monthly target. Smartsheet’s described format includes status and challenges as well as space to plan the next month. It is suited to goals that need repeated effort but can be meaningfully assessed over several weeks.

Use the monthly review to distinguish activity from results. Completing planned tasks is useful information, but compare it with the measure that defines the goal before deciding whether the approach needs to change.

7. Personal goal template

A personal goal template helps organize several kinds of goals and different time horizons. Smartsheet describes versions covering personal, professional, or financial areas, with short- and long-term periods and action steps. This is a good fit if you want one place to compare priorities across parts of your life rather than track a single project.

For personal-finance goals, make the target concrete enough to revisit: specify the outcome, an amount or other measure where applicable, and a review date. The template can hold the plan; it does not decide which financial priority should come first.

8. Project goals and objectives template

Teams can use a project goals and objectives template to connect a main project goal to measurable objectives and broader organizational goals. Smartsheet describes this format for making that alignment visible. It is different from a personal tracker because several contributors may need to understand how their work maps to shared outcomes.

When selecting a team template, look for clear ownership and a way to review objective-level progress. A statement of the project’s ambition without measurable objectives may be difficult for a team to use for decisions.

How to choose a goal-setting template

Compare the options on five practical dimensions before downloading one:

  • Audience: Are you planning alone, managing employees, coordinating a team, or working as a student?
  • Time horizon: Do you need a daily task list, weekly or monthly reviews, or a long-term view?
  • Format: Would you rather use a spreadsheet, document, PDF, or paper worksheet?
  • Planning depth: Do you need only a goal statement, or also milestones, resources, responsibilities, and obstacles?
  • Review method: Will you log progress regularly, check in at intervals, or assess a final outcome?

Smartsheet lists templates in Excel, Word, PDF, and Google Sheets, along with multiple audiences and review periods. Vertex42 lists Excel, Google Sheets, and PDF versions of its SMART worksheet. Availability and download formats can change, so confirm the format on the publisher’s page before relying on it.

How to turn a blank template into a usable plan

  1. Write the outcome. Describe what you want to be different, not just the activity you hope to do.
  2. Choose a measure and review date. Pick a way to check progress and a time to look at it; use the SMART definition provided by your chosen worksheet.
  3. Break the goal into next actions. Add milestones, tasks, or key steps that make the outcome actionable.
  4. Record likely obstacles. If the template allows, note barriers and a practical response rather than leaving the plan dependent on ideal conditions.
  5. Set the review rhythm. Choose daily, weekly, monthly, or another cadence that matches how quickly the goal can change.
  6. Revise from what you learn. Use the progress log or review fields to decide whether to continue, adjust the actions, or rethink the target.

A printed worksheet or paper planner is optional. Smartsheet suggests keeping goals visible, and Vertex42 offers a printable worksheet; the cited descriptions do not establish that buying a planner improves results. A spreadsheet or free printable can provide the same basic planning fields if it suits your habits better.
