8 Documented Ways David Gilmour Earns—and Uses—His Money

Public reporting documents David Gilmour’s music-related income channels and charitable proceeds, but not his personal payout from Pink Floyd’s rights deal or a full spending breakdown.

Public reporting documents several ways David Gilmour’s music and assets generate money, as well as charitable uses of specific proceeds. It does not establish eight personal income totals or a detailed spending budget. In particular, the reported $400 million Pink Floyd rights deal was a band-level transaction, not a disclosed personal payout to Gilmour.

1. Pink Floyd’s recorded music

Gilmour’s work with Pink Floyd is part of the group’s recorded-music catalog, a business that has generated substantial financial value. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2024 that Pink Floyd transferred rights to its recorded work to Sony Music for a reported $400 million. That was the reported value of the group transaction, not a public accounting of Gilmour’s individual share.

2. The 2024 Sony rights transaction

Gilmour characterized his payment from the transaction as an advance against income he otherwise expected to earn over the following years. In his 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said: “It’s an advance against what I would have earned over the next few years anyway.” The interview did not disclose the amount of his advance or his net proceeds. He also said he had not sold the publishing rights, which are distinct from the recorded-work rights at issue.

3. Songwriting and publishing

Publishing is an important distinction from the recorded-work transaction: Gilmour told the Los Angeles Times that he had not sold the publishing rights. The available reporting does not specify the value of his publishing income or his precise ownership share, so it cannot support a dollar estimate for this channel.

4. Solo recordings

Gilmour has also released music outside Pink Floyd. The official Pink Floyd archive announced his solo album Luck and Strange as a 2024 release on Sony Music, while his official biography documents earlier solo releases. These releases establish a recorded-music channel, but the sources do not give his sales, royalty rate, or personal earnings from the albums.

5. Concert performances and touring

Gilmour performed on a 2024 tour behind Luck and Strange, with multi-night engagements in Rome, London, Los Angeles, and New York, according to the Los Angeles Times. Live performance can generate revenue, but the cited coverage does not quantify performance fees, tour costs, or net proceeds.

6. Concert films and physical music formats

Recorded live performances can also reach audiences as physical releases. Gilmour’s official biography says David Gilmour Live at Pompeii was released in September 2017 on Blu-ray, vinyl, CD, and DVD. That documents the formats offered, not how many copies sold or how much Gilmour personally received.

7. The 2019 guitar auction

In June 2019, Gilmour sold more than 120 instruments and artefacts at Christie’s. The sale raised $21.5 million, and Gilmour gave the proceeds to ClientEarth; it was therefore not a personal windfall to count as money he kept. Christie’s reported these individual results:

Instrument Christie’s result in 2019
Martin D-35 $1,095,000; Christie’s said it set a then-record for a C.F. Martin guitar.
1954 White Fender Stratocaster $1,815,000.

More than 2,000 bidders from 66 countries registered for the sale, according to Christie’s. In a 2024 Guardian interview, Gilmour said he had kept a few favorites and generally thought of guitars as “tools of the trade.” The cited sources do not price the instruments he retained.

8. Charity-directed proceeds from “Hey Hey Rise Up”

The official David Gilmour biography says net proceeds from Pink Floyd’s 2022 single “Hey Hey Rise Up” went to charities helping alleviate the suffering of Ukrainian people. This is a documented charitable use of proceeds, not evidence of personal spending or a measure of the share of Gilmour’s wealth he has donated.

What is known about Gilmour’s personal spending?

The public sources cited here do not provide a full account of Gilmour’s current personal purchases, real-estate expenses, annual spending, or net worth. The documented financial events above should not be treated as a personal balance sheet: some concern band-level rights, some describe potential earnings without amounts, and the guitar-sale proceeds went to charity.
